Astrid has been a joy since I have had her, but lately I have noticed that has very stinky stools and has been passing gas. I am slowly switching her over to Nutro Kitten (she is 8 months) and planning to get her a better quality wet food (from Fancy Feast to Wellness). I was wondering if this could be from her food - maybe the kitten formula is too rich? Maybe she is old enough for adult food?

I know from searching the forums that everyone has a different experience with the premium foods, some brands giving cats this smelly problem and some brands clearing it up. I am hoping not to have to do too much trial and error. She is eating well, although getting picky about her wet food - she seems to only like the seafood flavors - but whew! what a smell! I gotta figure this one out.
Hopefully a new food will help with her little acne problem, too.

As always, any suggestions are welcome.

The acne problem could be her dish if it's plastic...is the acne under her chin? my cats all eat out of crystal or glass or ceramic...no acne.
Not sure about the food thing I have 2 stinky boys and my girls don't stink and they basically eat the same foods!

Well, the cat in question is 8 months so I don't think she needs a senior food...
I feed kitten wet food and adult dry food, personally, and have since around 8 or 9 months. She is 11 months now, and once this kitten food runs out she'll be about a year old and then it'll be all-adult.

How quickly are you switching over? It should take at least three or four days to switch one kind of food. Some cats do get a little stinky when switching just because they're getting used to a new food. I'd say, give it awhile before switching the wet also and see if it gets better.

I notice the food - stinky poo correlation big time in my kitty.

Beef - PU!!! You can smell it for days 20 ft away

Chicken and turkey Nutro pouches, almost odorless.

I feed Royal Canin dry and little odor in the box. (i dont remember what her previous dry did).

I do not feed my cat fish or seafood - good info out there as to why it is very bad for cats. Can you cut back on the seafood and see if it helps? Keep a smelly poo diary

Yeah, the beef food started the big time stinkies. And I am trying to get her off the seafood, but that is what she wants. I will be strong and keep trying to get her to eat other flavors.

A friend of mine who also adopted older kittens from a shelter said his kittens were very stinky when they first came home, even though they were eating the same food as in the shelter. He said it took about a month for them to not smell as bad. Maybe the stress of a new environment is part of it.

And a "stinky" diary is a very good idea. Especially if it keeps up and I end up taking her to the vet I will be able to let him everything I tried and the results.

This has been my experience as well. Has Astrid been with you long?
We have no idea (usually) on the background of a shelter cat and strays likely are eating all kinds of junk. I assume the stinky is their system's way of righting itself once they are in a healthy environment.

And dont forget to post Astrid pics!

Acne is usually caused by bacteria on the bowls. Please switch to Stainless steel, glass or ceramic and in that order of preference if you are using plastic.

Okay, so I got paid today and got premium wet food (Wellness) and stainless steel bowls. Fingers crossed that this helps.

I just cleaned up another stinky mess - I use WBCL(which is great) and I never smell urine, or poo if she does it while I am at work, but if I am here while she is going - nothing can stop the smell. YIKES!! I clean it and take it outside immediately. I HATE to spray any air freshener, but this is bad. Maybe her system is still adjusting to the richer and better food she is getting...

She gets her final deworming dose tomorrow, so with the new bowls, good food, and the final worming meds, hopefully her bowels will calm down a bit. I imagine this cannot be comfortable for her either, she must be gassy and bloated and ugh...poor kitty.

And pics soon - I promise! She is very pretty even if she doesn't always smell so pretty right now...
