A family friend of ours got a new kitten from somewhere in Alberta. They were looking on the internet about different cat breeds, and was reading about the Egyptian Mau and noticed how similar their kitten was to a Mau. When they took her to the vet to get shots, the vet said if she's not 100% Mau, then she's 99.9%.

I was wondering how rare are Maus?

I don't think they are too rare...my friend has one that she got from a breeder in the US.

They arent rare but they arent a common breed .. I am a little shocked at a vet just by looking calling something purebred..

Why are you shocked. If the vet was into the cat fancy and showed cats or was very familiar with them, they would know if the cat resembled a breed or not.

One siamese breeder/friend went to college/vet school and is now a vet herself. She also was active in breeding and showing cats. So in her case, if a person came in with their cat (it was a not common breed) she probably would know if it was one or not.

Most vets are probably not cat or dog breeders, but some are and are familiar with various breeds.

They would also know not to tell people there cat is a breed without a pedigreed to back it up. Pedigreed cats in general are rare so I highly doubt this cat has Egyptian Mau blood in it at all.
