OK, I am very eager to discuss this topic
We went to a beer festival Friday night and they had Hookahs set up outside. I have never smoked anything in my life (ok, get the laughs out now
) and tried it out. I loved it! I loved it so much in fact that my fiancé and I ended up buying our own Hookah Saturday. We went to a Hookah Bar to buy it. I had never heard of such a place. The owner was very nice and taught us how to set it up and we used it there at the bar, then he taught us how to clean it up and pack it up in the carrying case. We bought 2 flavors of the shisha (tobacco with fruit and molasses) apricot, and strawberry. Then brought it over to a friends house with us that night. We haven't smoked it since. One of the employees in the Hookah bar told us that he smokes it every night before bed because it relaxes him, as a matter of fact, the first thing the employees did when they came in for work was set up a hookah for them to smoke. My intentions for buying it were for social reasons. We have a game room set up in the house. We have a kegerator (beer on tap) and I thought the Hookah would be a fun addition.
I was under the impression that Hookah smoking was safer than cigarette smoke. Everyone at the festival said that since the smoke was filtered through the water before being inhaled that the carcinogens didn't have the chance to make it into your lungs. I have researched online, and found that isn't necessarily true. There haven't been many tests to confirm which is worse, but the consensus seems to be that the Hookah is comparable to cigarette smoking.
Hookah smoking is becoming very popular. Hookah bars are springing up all over the place. I was reading that it is very popular among college kids, and the other night when we stopped into a Hookah bar (to inquire about buying one) the bar was full of 18 year olds.
I am just interested to see what other people think about Hookah smoking, and Hookah bars. From what I saw, and I may be wrong, it seems that these Hookah bars don't have to follow the same rules that apply to cigarette smoking inside public buildings. The Hookah bar was a full service Mediterranean restaurant and there were Hookahs on every table... Do you think young people might be mislead about the potential dangers of Hookah smoking? Do you think that with the growing spark of interest they should be more educated into the possible dangers, or is there not any concern? When we first brought our Hookah home I told my fiancé we should have people over every weekend. After researching it this morning though, I am thinking it will be more like once a month
I also wanted to add, when I mention it as a "new interest" I am referring to the US. I read that the Hookah is an old tradition and that other countries, such as India, have used it for years.

Guess maybe they arent so popular around here...I dunno. Guess I need to get to googling..lol.

At least in Colorado and Nebraska, if you say they are for anything else, they can't sell them to you. It's all about semantics, really, because you could use a bong to smoke tobacco or a hookah to smoke illegal products.
My BIL had one at least 7 years ago. I smoked it with him (my Dad did too, which just shocked me!) at Christmas one year. It did have a very nice flavor...
