Ok, so well, Forget my other thread about the rocks. I checked it up on the internet about it. And found out how to correctly set up the cage and all that..And 30 dollars later, I got me a new hermit crab and bunches of stuff for him!

He's in a "grover" shell. (from sesame street..the daughter liked that one) Plus, he was the smallest one in the bunch, which is what I wanted too. We'll be getting him a playmate soon.

I got him a couple other painted shells as well. Including a Green Bay Packer one, (for daddy, he doesnt like hermits so much..but now he wants to see it in the packer one
), and a Hello Kitty one.

Fun-FUN! He's sleeping now, he was kind of scared when I brought him home.
Went and crawled in a little hole.

Wish I had a digital cam for ya!

I've had a few hermit crabs before. They are slow to come out from hiding but be patient.

Yeah..He came out. And we played lots. The cats are scared of him. lol.

SO..I went and got my hermi a new friend. He was all alone.
But now, it seems like they are fighting or something. I have no idea. The one keeps running over the other one, and flipping him over, and trying to get in his shell.
It's kind of sad. Poor little guy.

I have them separated at the moment, because I want the new one to get some sleep without being harrassed all day. Seriously..All day this had to happen. When I left for work, and when I came home, the one was trying so hard to get in the others shell..both times. So I had to figure this has been going on all day.

I've been reading like crazy about it. And the conclusion I've come to is that he wants the new ones shell. And he's trying to get him outta there to get it.
But the new one isnt letting him. He just pulls himself so far back into the shell.

I'm glad you got him a friend! Hmm...I've never seen them do that. Do you have enough empty shells for them to move into?

Yes. They currently have 3 other shells to choose from. I was just reading that sometimes they think anothers shell is more attractive, and want that one.
Other than that, it sounds as if they need some more protien in thier diet. Guess I have to go buy a cuttlebone for them.

Other than that, I had them separated for an hour or so, and when I put them back together, the aggression was lessened.

That's good! I don't think he can get hurt when he's hiding all the way inside his shell, so I think he'll be okay.

They like things to climb too.

If you really want to have some fun, get some plain shells in various sizes, some non toxic paints, some pretty colored rhinestones and super glue and help your daughter decorate shells.

I used to do this monthly with my niece and nephew when I had hermies, we always had a blast making bright, and sometimes garish shells.

Congrats. but I have read that hermies should not have painted shells and that they should have a buddy as well.

I had a hermit crab once. He "bit/pinched" me everytime I fed him or cleaned his cage. Then he died (no, I didn't kill him!). The shell-decorating project sounds like something my daughter would like to do... maybe its time I give hermits another go!

Painted and decorated shells are perfectly ok, but you have to use non-toxic paints and let them dry completely as shells are porous.
