This is so unlike my cat. He is 9 years old and this is the first time I've ever heard him hiss! Even when we tried to bathe him, all he did was yell a bit. He never hissed! My husband said this is the second time he's done it to him. When we leave and Cooper slips out the front door (to eat grass), we make him come back inside. The last two times my husband has pushed him inside, Cooper hissed at him! He wasn't acting aggressive or anything. He wasn't even facing him. He hissed as he was walking back into the house. Like he was muttering obscenities under his breath or something.

He never hisses any other time. Not even when my 2 year old is bugging him. Do you think he's just angry that we won't let him eat grass? Might there be something else going on? We don't like to let him eat the grass out there because he throws up afterwards. Should we buy some of that cat grass I've seen at the pet store? He's got a vet appointment coming up soon for his checkup and I'll ask the vet, too. I just want to see if anyone has any opinions on this before then. Thanks!

I think it's a great idea that you have a vet visit scheduled for him...always better to be safe than sorry right!. It could also be that he is angry about not being allowed outside.

I would suggest the indoor cat grass. I always have some on hand for my cat Reilly and he loves it. Sometimes I will go outside and pick him some from the lawn and he really enjoys that as well.

He probably just doesn't want to come back inside, that's all. Cat's hiss, that is something they do. I wouldn't be worried, but mention it next time you are at the vet if you are curious or worried. My cat Eliott never hisses but once when he got out and he was scared, he hissed at me. It was funny too, it sounded like it took a lot of effort and he didn't know he could make that sound!

I agree, I probably wouldn't worry about it.

He just wanted to stay outside eating grass. I can't blame him, I would rather be outside too!

You could get some grass for him to eat on the inside, but maybe he just prefers to sit outside.

Cheers.

My cat Shane hisses a lot, and he does it because he doesn't get his own way. For example: If he's on my computer chair, all I have to do is ask him to get down. He'll hiss, and storm off hissing. He's just a crabby old thing.

LOL! I can picture that!

Anyway, I wouldn't worry, he could have smelled another animal out there also, my cats will hiss when they smell where other animals have been, even if the scent is on me!

Cats hiss for a variety of reasons, but almost always when something is aggravating them. Your cat may have been eating grass or also smelling something on the grass.......like another cats urine.
The smell of another cat almost always triggers a hiss or two. Maybe you have a strange cat patrolling your yard.

If he's hissing when your husband is pushing him, it's possible he has a sore area that your husband happens to be touching.

Thanks everyone! I'm not so worried anymore. He was probably just cranky that he had to come inside. I decided to take him outside with me today. He's always been an inside cat (and a scaredy cat at that) so I don't want to leave him out unsupervised. We walked around the yard and he explored everything. He had a good time. I think I may have started something though. I went out to turn on the sprinklers and I heard him calling me! I couldn't disappoint him, so I let him out again. I'm guessing daily walks in the yard are going to be a regular thing for us now! Ah, well! Whatever makes my little man happy!
