Do you check where your cat is before you leave the house?

we (Rick, my bf) and i, always do. Which can be a pain if we're running late and he's chosen that particular moment to hide. and you know how they can hide..you have to go through every room three times before you finally come upon their latest hiding place. once we couldn't find Wonton any where, i rattled the treat bag, shook his beanbag Mousey, called and called, went through the house... not a cat in sight. Not a peep, not a rustling of clothing, nothing. Silence. I was starting to get that sinking feeling that maybe he'd gotten out, when Rick picked up his big winter jacket off the floor..and there's Wonton, blinking sleepily up at us as if to say "who...me???".

i just feel safer if i SEE him before i leave the house..i don't know why. even if hunting for him makes me end up being late. is anyone else the same?

Usually I do, and when I don't, I WORRY and that creates its own set of problems. That's what happens when the treasures we have are so very valuable AND have brains & can walk

It's hard not to know where they are in a small flat, but yes I do. I usually give them a treat when I leave so they're usually hovering around my feet when I'm getting ready to go out. Then I dash out while they're eating their treats. I do panic if I don't know where they both are.

I know what you mean (for me, it's part of my OCD) and we have four cats so you can imagine how late I am sometimes!

We also tell them to "be good" and that "Molly's in charge".

Of course I do! How else can I let her know I am leaving and say goodbye?

Yes, I'm a bit ocd about it, in fact, and sometimes have to check a couple of times. Each of my girlies gets a kiss and three pieces of kibble treat just before I leave as well as a big I love you and approximation of how long until I'm back home.

The DH and I do a head count. If both aren't out we will go and find them. My one worry is that one will get locked in our closet and end up staying there the whole day.

Zissou pretty much follows me around, so it's hard to not know where she is, but I do get worried if I haven't seen her in awhile. I have to find her as soon as I get home, before I leave, if someone has opened the door but I haven't seen her in a while.
One time she got out when I opened the door to check for a package, and I didn't notice. I took a shower, and then as I was getting out the package got here, I answered the door, and the guy said "Is that your cat that just ran in?" I turned around and Zissou was sitting behind me. He said she had been in the stairwell and then had run in the apartment when I opened the door... and I've been paranoid ever since.

Yep. We always like to know where she is. Plus we like to tell her goodbye and give her a kiss on the head before we go. My husband's just as bad about this as I am.

We do the same thing when we come home too. Find her, make sure she hasn't gotten into anything....and give her a kiss on the head and some pets.

I always check out Jamie's whereabouts before I leave, tell him I'll see him later, and approximately when I'll be home.

Nope. Stumpy follows me everywhere and she's always right behind me when I'm trying to leave. She normally jumps up in the window when I leave and says good-bye

When mine were kittens ..... I used to call them by name and when they came, I would love on them and pet them ....So now that they are older ...... I say "cat count" and call them each by name, they all come running, I love on them and tell them I will be back. The same when I come home. Sometimes I think they are cat/dogs.

I have to because I need to make sure Tryon is locked in my bedroom before I leave.

I hate locking her up and luckily since I'm moving on Monday I won't have to anymore, but she's really not supposed to be here so I need to keep her hidden in case my landlord does a surprise inspection (which he's known for). So my choice came down to "leave her on the street to starve" (she was 3.5lbs full grown when I found her) or "take her in and hide her until I move". I chose the latter
She does get free run when I'm home because if the landlord comes knocking I can scoop her up quick and hide her in the bedroom before he comes in.

Very excited about this. As of tomorrow, she gets free run of the entire house and lots of cat furniture to play with. I didn't want to get any while I was in my apartment for fear that would make it a little too obvious I had a cat here
But I know I'll still check on her before I leave even when I don't need to lock her up anymore.

O M G - yes - hate to think they have got somewhere that could be a prison for the few hours I am out. Or heaven forbid, with no access to litter box
You now how they are
always finding sneaky holes to fall asleep in ! So the last job is always a quick head count

glad i'm not the only one that says goodbye to my kitty and tells him to be good, too
when we come home he usually comes to greet us, but if he doesn't we always go find him.

this is my main reason for doing a 'head count'. i do usually tell them how long i think i'll be gone, & to be good - but i'm more concerned that no one's a 'prisoner'!
