Hi - This is my first summer with my cats, who are almost 1 year old. I am wondering how often to leave the air conditioning on all day for them when I am gone. I want to take care of them well, and also need to be careful not to run up a huge ac bill. I live in the Midwest where it can be very hot AND humid at times. How do you decide how hot is too hot for kitties?

If you can't tolerate the heat, neither could the cats. It would be best to set it at a tolerable temperature for them. If fans will keep the house cool, you could use those as well.

A lady that works for the local electric co-op told me that if you use a/c, that it is more cost effective to keep it at a reasonable level all the time. If you turn it off during the day, and the house gets very hot, it must work harder to cool down the hot house. It may be to your advantage to try this. My sweetie always has me do this and our bills aren't really outrageous. We live on the NC coast, and it is misrably hot and humid for half the year.

I guess my cats are spoiled as I leave the a/c on all the time for them. When I get home from work, I turn on fans to circulate the air around and help keep it a little cooler(a/c is on the whole time though, it's just the fans help too). If I think the cats are getting to hot, I turn the a/c down. of course they go out on the porch and it's hot out there so I leave the door opened and when they come in, tha a/c is already running(cooling off the outside of course) and they can cool off, when they come in. yes, yes my cats have me wrapped around their paws!:tounge2:

plus if they are long-hairs, get them a lion shave for the summer. Make sure there are plenty of water bowls around, or even leave a little bit of water in the bathtub in case they want to quickly get cool.

I have a window airconditioner. When it's really hot and humid, I leave the a/c on at a med/low setting while I'm at work. Snowball seems to appreciate it, and if it gets too cold for him, he is able to go into a warmer room.

I am lucky, my a/c has a timer. I set mine to come on at around one or so depending on the temperature. I try and keep the indoor temperature around 23-24c for my pets while I am away.
