okee, i asked this in my other thread but thought this topic deserved its own thread!

does anyone have any advice on how they give their cats medicine out of a dropper, or any techniques they use that work for them?

the medicine the vet gave me today smells very strong, i don't think i could mix it with food (and my kitties only eat dry). he's had tuna flavored medicine before, but this stuff must taste awful, judging his reaction to it!

he DEFINITELY didn't want to take it, he struggled and fought and clawed and he kept jerking his head away when i'd finally try to squirt the drops in his mouth, just causing SUCH a mess.

does anyone have any tips? is there some special trick to easily giving meds out of a dropper that i'm just totally missing out on? or will it be a struggle each time?

thanks in advance!

"sit" on the cat, not really but hover over the cat so he cannot back out from between your legs. then scruff the cat and open his mouth with your finger while you are holding the dropper, work the dropper in and squirt it all in. Do this really fast. Scruff, open mouth, shove dropper in and squirt.

I may have posted on your other post .....
My doctor recently administered some anti biotics to my cats .... he just stuck it right next to their teeth (outside of their teeth) inside their lip and squirted .... not having to pry the mouth open just stuck it right there and they swallowed. Its the way I administered the rest of their meds and for the first time ever I had no problems at all.
Except I couldnt show them the syringe as I approached or they would run.
I just sat right next to them, put it in their lips and squirted. Oh and then they were mad for a while until I bribed them with chicken.

If you put the dropper on the side of their mouth, instead of the front,it helps a lot. The medicine goes in to the inside of their cheek. It's harder for them to spit it out and they almost have to swallow it.

Yes that is true, you can just stick it on the side too. I was telling you based on the idea that your cats are giving you trouble taking it. Sometimes you can just scruff the cat and stick the syringe on the side of the cats mouth.

Scruff your cat, hold him up a little [so he relaxes his mouth] put the dropper in the corner of his mouth pointed towards the back and squirt it out.

The easiest way I've found is to draw up the dose into a syringe (not a dropper), then fill the rest of the syringe with tuna water or chicken baby food. This way, it tastes good and the cat won't fight it as much.
