I know there are many threads on this subject, but I can't find exactly what I'm looking for.

I want to get a non clay-based litter that is soft like the clay stuff. I've tried swheatscoop, and they used it, but it's very hard on the paws and feet (they fling it out everywhere).

It looks to me like most of the non clay-based kinds are hard pellets. Some I can't see in the bag to tell what they are. Also, apparently not all of them admit to being clay based, because some that I read on here that are (like arm & hammer) don't say so on the box.

I'd also like to find something I can buy locally. I can't afford the shipping to buy it on the internet.

Thanks for your help.

Thanks. I've read a ton of stuff on this site, but I've never seen much mentioned about the texture of the litter. I don't care if it's clumping or non clumping and I don't care about odor issues so much either, since I scoop frequently and change fairly often. I just want something that's not going to be hard on their paws or on my feet when I step on what they've flung out of the boxes.

I was going to suggest Feline Pine, but it is hard on your feet if you step on it outside the box. But the good news is that it is heavy enough where a lot of cats don't even get it out of the box. Mine really don't too much compared to the clay litters. I don' know if it is what you are looking for but I love it and highly recommend it.

IMO, chicken feed is the same texture, only slightly heavier, than Swheat. I didn't like the way the Swheat covered the smell(or lack of ability to cover smell). I bought a 50 lb. bag of chicken feed for $7.50. The granules are slightly larger(about the size of non-scoopable litter). I added a bit of Arm & Hammer's New High Performance Natural Litter because my family complained it smelled like a barn in the bathroom. That was only to on box & it is in a small bathroom....

Chicken feed might be worth a try! So far, I love it & it's price! I went to the feed mill & asked for chicken feed.

How about Yesterday's News or Feline Pine? There's also Cedarific, but I don't believe it's widely available. The World's Best is another option, but we were not at all fond of it and believe it doesn't live up to its name. Have you tried the Arm & Hammer Super Scoop? Even though, as you mentioned, it is clay, it has very fine grains not the bigger, harder ones. This is our very favorite.

Wow, I can hardly wait to tell you about my success story!

I use Woody Pet. I bought it at a local livestock store. A 30lb bag cost 5.99. It's great. It is made up of un-uniform sized wood pellets. You use just a bit on the bottom of the litter box. As the pellets soak up the urine, they puff into dust, BUT there is no urine odor. All I do is scoop the poop whenever I find it. I was EXTREMELY skeptical about this litter until I actually tried it.
