Hello!

I've recently returned from a week away from home (during which time my boyfriend was also away for a couple days, and a friend was catsitting for us). Now that we are both back and our schedule is back to normal, Tak is punishing us for leaving her!

As soon as our bedroom door closes at night, she begins to meow constantly. It's these awful, mournful meows (similar to what she would do when she was in heat... she's spayed now). We have always slept with our bedroom door closed, although she has spent the ocassional night in there with us. She indicates that she wants to stay in our room by jumping on our bed at bedtime. There's no chance of leaving her in our room lately as she meows constantly no matter where she is! She is given the run of the house at night, and always has fresh food and water.

I've read the article on here about Nighttime Crazies, but I don't think that's the issue. I went out to the store the other day and came back to find her crying and miserable. It seems to affect her all day and night (although the meowing is definitely worse at night!)

Is this something that she'll get over? We've been trying to give her lots of extra love and pets, but she doesn't seem to want to be around us. She just cries and cries... I know she would like to get outside but this neighbourhood is not safe for cats (lots of dogs, other cats and mean people). We've lived here for 2 years and never let her out at this address.

Hopefully I gave enough information to get a little feedback from everyone! Thanks for any suggestions!

Get her to the vet to be sure she didn't fall ill while you were away. Even if you "think" she isn't sick, she could be and you need to rule that out first.

Jaffa is a clingy cat who gets particularly clingy after a stay in the cattery, including crying at night. He does get over it though and settles down so hopefully your cat will too.

A couple of years ago I was in the hospital and I had 2 people coming into the apartment to check on my cats. The youngest is very much a "mommy's girl", and wouldn't let anyone near her. So for 2 weeks she didn't have any human touch

When I got home she was beside herself and wouldn't let me out of her site and was always pasted up against me or laying on top of me. Plus she cried a lot.

Your cat thought you had abandoned it and it missed you. Now you're back and it's happy and is making sure that you aren't going anywhere. Give it lots of love and attention and it will soon realize that you are back.

Hello!

Thanks everyone for the suggestions so far.

I will consider a visit to the vet, although I don't think that she is sick since it was only after our absenses that she started this up...

Hopefully she just needs a few more days to see that everything is back to normal and that'll calm her down!

And I will try leaving our door open at night, although then she just stands at the foot of our bed and howls...

She seems to be a little more sane today... let's hope it keeps up.

Maybe she's just worried that she will be "left behind" again. And want's to have you in her sight. my boys are like that as well. They need to be reasured that you're not leaving them behind. We gave up on keeping our door closed at night. Personally, I love all the extra affection and cuddles and falling asleep with two purring kitties! Good luck!

They can get really weird about that, all right - I visited my siblings for ten days last year; when I came home Molly and Bobby both started sleeping ON me constantly, where before they mostly just slept near me or up against me (somtimes Bobby would rest his head on me). Molly slept on me every night for ten months straight.

Tak shows affection really strangely. She never cuddles us, but likes to be near us sometimes. I think she just likes to know where we are and what we are doing!

Even when we leave our bedroom door open, she will only ocassionally sleep on the verrrry bottom corner of the bed.

Sounds like the separation anxiety and resulting strange behaviour is a cat thing... since it's happening to you guys too! Today, she seems to be getting progressively more "normal" (for her!) so we'll see if this is clearing itself up!
