OMG! I think she is in heat, but I wouldn't know because 1) never knew her before the babies and 2) I've never been around a cat in heat. She stays in the kitten room all day except for a few hours. Last night, she was howling so loud that the entire family had to sleep in the master bedroom. The girls rooms flank the bathroom she stay in, and they couldn't sleep so 4 of us piled into our bed (thank god its king size, but it was still a pretty rough night.)

I've heard that a vet can get a cat out of heat by, um, inserting a tube in their parts. I'm at my wits end and seriously considering it. I can't imagine living like this another 5 days. Has anyone else ever heard of this?

It makes sense to me - you can but ask.

I wouldn't risk doing it myself in case it's not as simple as that or is an old wives tale.

Keep her confined in a cool, dimly-lit room along with her food and water, litter, comfoy bed and a few favorite toys. The symptoms should reduce somewhat and when she is done, get her spayed.

She has four week old kittens. It will be at least another 4 weeks before she can be spayed.
Also, she already has the dimly lit room with everything she needs. Should I move her into a room away from the kittens?

No, they need each other - and you'll NEVER hear the end of it if you do that! And for heaven's sake don't go sticking anything inside her! Ask the vet what to do, and move them all to another room if necessary.

Maybe try a Feliway diffuser in the bathroom to see if that will help calm her, or possibly one of the other< (what do you call them?), scent therapies.

I had two girls go through a heat about the same time befor I was able to get them spayed. All in all they weren't too bad. Of course I say that after the fact.

Good luck to you.

The incessant meowing has stopped for the time being, hopefully it won't start back up tonight. I'm still not sure if she is in heat, or just is vocalizing to get a break from the babies. She is confined with them all but 2 hours or so a day. I tried installing a baby gate, so she could come and go as she pleased (I have to keep the kittens away from my toddlers), but the door was too small for the gate. This afternoon, we let her out and did a bit of babysitting for her. We let her sleep in her favorite place our bed for two hours and then played with her for another hour. I don't know if the play tired her out, but she hasn't meowed in a few hours.
