I noticed Jade favoring her left eye today before leaving for work, when I got home today hubby informed me that her eye has a scratch. Her eye is watering, she keeps cleaning it and the horrible thing is my next pay check goes ALL COMPLETELY to my rent. What do I do? Can I treat it at home? HELP PLEASE!

If her eye has a scratch the vet needs to examine it. Sometimes they need ointment other times they need other measures. Your safest bet is to make an appointment and make payments to the vet.

The problem is my vet does not take payments. Only cash, checks, or credit cards.

I tried last time I was in to talk to them about payment options. They said they were no longer taking payments because they were stiffed on their payments before by other customers. :/ I'm so upset I'm near tears. She's keeping it half open, She can still see, she closes her eye if you put your finger close. Why can't they sell Kitty eye drops at wal mart for this? Has anyone else had this problem and been able to treat it home or get directions from their vet on how to treat it at home?

This has to be so upsetting for you to see your precious little Jade so uncomfortable. I agree that she needs to be examined and treated by her Vet. The underlying cause may be bacterial, viral, allergic or traumatic with possible underlying eye problems that require a trained professional to diagnose. Please feel better, little eye!

I've decided to contact the vet immediately in the morning. Perhaps if I explain the situation, she can at LEAST give me some advice if she wont see her and let me make payments. The scratch is just surface. Not too deep from what I can see. Hopefully her eye will look better in the morning ): I'm so upset. I think I'm gonna cry myself to sleep tonight.

What about finding another vet who will do other payment options?

I can sympathize. My regular vet does not accept payments for services, but they will take a post dated check which I have had to do in the past even though I really don't like doing that.

That is one of the inflexibilities that has me considering taking all my business to the vet in town that I have used on occasion. As a matter of fact I think I may start a thread with comparisons between the two and ask opinions.

I looked at the Care Credit link that gayef posted and that may be a very good way for you to get your Jade looked at. I really hope you can.

I really think you need to find a way to have Jade seen by a vet. We once had a Sheltie who's eye was scratched by one of our cats; her eye had to be cauterized. We didn't think it looked bad, either, but the vet obviously said otherwise. It may seem like a small scratch, but you just don't know unless you have a vet look at it.
I know it's hard trying to find a way to pay the bills sometimes, but problems come up & you just don't have a choice. Good luck; hope it's nothing serious.

SO here's an update. I've called EVERY vet in town and the surrounding areas, and there is only one vet that takes payments and that's only if you've established credit with them. Which, they are not my regular vet so thus I have no established credit with them. Looking closer though, the scratch is not directly on her eye but it is between here "third eyelid" and the corner of her eye. It's obviously uncomfortable for her because she won't let us look at it very much. I don't know what I"m going to do. Maybe I'll just have to blow off some bills. :/

I wouldn't dare ask my family. They'd have a crapfit to think I'm borrowing money for a cat. They don't understand. As far as friends, I don't have too many. I think I'll ask my cousin. Maybe she'll have the money. The good news is her eye is looking better this morning and she is trying to open it more. Sigh. I'll do what I have to to get her to the vet!

Thank you so much. It's nice to have encouraging words. I was just telling my fiance tonight that I am such a bad mommy but it makes me feel better knowing someone else besides him thinks so. You guys here are amazing. I'll have an update tomorrow. I'm going to try a few more avenues!

Oh, I hope to hear good news - I just found out my Elsa has a scratched/infected/messed up eye, and am going to take her to the vet tomorrow. For some reason, our vet has extremely reasonable rates. Please let us know what happens!

Maybe you can arrange a payment schedule with your utility suppliers? They can often be quite reasonable - better than just blowing them off!

Maybe switch to the other vet for the future?

Well. I was thinking about doing just that this morning, but the thing is I didn't get my check in the mail this morning. I swear it's just one thing after another. And like the other 70% of Americans, I live paycheck to paycheck. SO NOW, I've called a few animal hospitals in order to see if any of the hospitals can give me advise about home treatment untill I can get her into the vet and OF COURSE none of them can't. Which is understandable. I just don't understand why on earth things had to play out like this today. No check ): sigh.
I'll monitor her, keep her comfortable, and if things get worse I'll rush her to an emergency vet and asked to be billed. (I'll say I forgot my checkbook because I was so upset about the incident!
) I'm desperate. Jade is doing ok though. She's still very playful! Which is a good sign. She's acting like she more annoyed at the cut as oppose to uncomfortable. sigh.
