Well sometimes it is needed to get a fresh start - and that means a good grooming by a pro and NO it dosen't necessarily mean having her hair cut short. Once you have a clean base to work with it will be easier to keep up. Also ask the groomer what kind of tool they suggest for your baby. Not every brush is good for every cat.

To trim them off safely wedge a metal comb between the mat and the skin and trim off only what is above the comb. It's impossible to cut skin if you do it like this.
Course it'll come out looking as if a lawnmower ran over her.

A professional grooming including a shave may not be what you want but at least the coat will be cut evenly all over and will grow out all the same length. Then after that you'll do your brushing before the mats form and keep her in good shape.

Sorry- he

If he is matted to the extent that they are up in his armpits, I think you really have no alternative but to take him to a groomer for a complete clip job. It is extraordinarily difficult to clip those areas without cutting the cats skin. I have been grooming cats for over 30 years, and it still makes me break out into a cold sweat.

Be really careful. I truly think you need to find a cat groomer.

Aw poor fellow, he must be very uncomfortable. Our Ebony was a long haired fellow and he often got knots. It seemed most of them had what looked like clumping litter in them. I had nurse's scissors (blunt end) and did what the other poster above suggested - put the comb between the skin and clump and cut. Ebony was a sweetheart about letting me do it while I sat on the rug with him between my legs. I'm sure he felt much better without the clumps. I would do a little bit each night until I had taken care of them and then brush him well. Some clumps would still come back now and again, but not nearly as bad as the first time.
