Do your cats share litterboxes?

Harley has had his own (obviously) since he was little, he's been the only cat in the house for the past year. Since we brought Davidson home this weekend, we got him a baby kitty litter box, and Harley won't stay out of it! He always wants to go in there, and Davidson doesn't seem to care at all, but Harley is so big, he hardly fits in there!

Is it normal for cats to want to share boxes? I saw Davidson trying to get into Harley's yesterday - but he's way too tiny to get into it cuz its a big rubbermaid tote.

I just think its weird that Harley wants to use Davidson's box - they are both always cleaned at the same time, so its not like one is cleaner than the other!

It is suggested to have 2 litterboxes if you have one cat so they can pee in one and poop in the other. Now that you have two cats you should have one litterbox each plus one extra. So he may now see the two litterboxes as one to pee in and one to poop in. If he does both then that is fine either way really. Don't expect them to stick to their own litterboxes. I have 6 cats and 7, sometimes 8 boxes. They mostly poo in some and mostly pee in the other but there is always one cat that will just do both in either box. You can't decide for them!

We got our two kitties together, they are brother and sister, and they have always used the same litterbox (we only have one box--we live in an apartment and really wouldn't have anyplace to put a second one). Probably Harley is just checking out the new facilities!

Oh yeah, he's checking it all out! I was just concerned at first cuz I wanted to be sure that Davidson knew that he could go in there too. Davidson seems to be going okay, so I guess I shouldn't be worried.

We'll be sure to always have 2 of course, but we don't have room for more than that.

Sadie & Dexter are litter mates.
They have always shared their litter box.

Sadie has an area for her pee & poop and Dexter for his.
I am retired so I am home part of the day...
I usually scoop immediately when they poop.

I have 2 and they share a litter box. My original 2 only ever had the one box. When Magpie died and I got Mosi I started off with a 2nd box so that he could use the litter he was used to (different to what Jaffa used) and have a box without a door. However, he used the other one right from the start and Jaffa used his so they ended up both using each box. I got rid of the spare and they are both happy using the 1 box.

I used to have one cat but then I started working 12.5 hour shifts and decided to get a second cat so that she wouldn't be lonely.

I also got a second litter box, but found that both were using both of them and it was just more work for me to clean. Trying to keep one litter pan clean when you have a bad back is hard enough, two is worse.

So I got rid of one pan and left the one in the bathroom. Both kept right on using it without any problem. I do scoop it often though; morning, around dinner time and before bed.

If your cats will share one pan, to me that's a bonus.

Mine don't have a choice but to share. Granted I have 10 cats with 6 boxes, but all of the boxes are oversized if not twice the size of a regular box. I just scoop a lot.

I have 4 cats and 3 litter boxes. They all share and seem to do just fine. All of them are covered and large boxes so that there's plenty of room.
I scoop 2x a day and dump the box completely once a week.

5 litterboxes here. I honestly don't know who uses what, they like their privacy. I do know that the older two prefer the ones upstairs in the kitchen, and I think the younger two like the one in the basement. I can tell you that when I kept the kittens in the spare room and they had a box, the older kitties were pretty interested in what was in there, and I think may have used it as well.
Maybe you could get a medium sized one too, that both kitties could manage. Davidson will eventually outgrow the mini box/ You could probably get away with two boxes if you are vigilant about scooping.. I had two when I had two kitties in an apt.

Yup. It's share, share alike here.

There is plenty of them, and BF cleans them religiously. Mine just aren't that possessive of them.
