Hi all, Lily has just gone into heat..she kept me up all night with her constant meowing and crying. How long will this last and more importantly is it safe for me to have her spayed while she is in heat??

Or do I have to wait until she is no longer in heat and then have her spayed??

A friend told me it lasts about three weeks, but that the vet can give a cat an injection to lessen the time, but I don't think I should ber interfering with her cycle or is it safe enough?

I feel so bad, i should have had it done long ago - she's about 7 months now.

It's done all the time, but the best thing would be to ask the vet herself - a poll of 10 friends on any idea will get you 10 answers :-).

Usually a heat cycle will last approximately a week (give or take) In the UK, many vets will not spay during the cycle due to the increased amount of blood in the area - but it is possible.

I would speak to your vet, explain the situation and see what they have to say. They may be able to book her in for the start of next week once her cycle has finished!

I would gether spayed as soon as you can. I had to have my Lily spayed when she was in heat. She had no problems.

I have had a few cats spayed while in heat too. The problem with waiting is that you never know how long it will last because it is different for all cats. If you wait until she is done to make the appointment then by the time they can probably get you in, she could be back in heat again! So I would call your vet and ask.

One of my friends (a vet student) used to work in vet clinics. She said that cats are induced ovulators, so you can stop their heat with a thermometer (I'm not sure how to phrase this in a G-rated way, but I think you get the idea.) I wouldn't try this on your own though, for sure.

It sounds like it should work, actually - if it did though, wouldn't vets typically do it?

I suppose you can always ask your vet!

Most of mine were in heat for about a week - week 1/2. While you can spay in heat, it will cost more as things are enlarged and its more bleeding. It would be safer to wait till she's out and do your best to schedule as quick as possible.

Thanks guys for all your advice, I called my vet now and they said to bring her in tomorrow morning - and they confirmed that it's OK for them to operate while she's on heat.

My poor baby
I'm so releived though
