Hey, so I've been thinking I'm going to call into work tomarrow. And I am no good at faking it. So unless I get violently ill between now and tomarrow morning, I have to think of a lie. And I hate that.

Anyways...I just had the most horrible day ever at work. We were so busy, I never got a chance to breath. And I really need a day off.

So how in the world do I go about calling in? What should I say? I've already called in once, and they needed a doctors excuse, so I called my GYNO and told her I was having cramps, and she got me off work for 2 days.

Can I use that excuse again? I'm just in a "calling in" rut, and thought my TCS support system could come to the rescue.

Tell them your daughter was up all night with nightmares and you've had no sleep and neither has she. (works for me
)
OR
tell them your car is acting up and you can't get it fixed until your husband gets off work.
OR
Your daughters daycare is closed because of the holidays (my kids are closed)
OR
Call them late and tell them the power went out in the middle of the night and your alarm didn't go off in time and your waiting for the power company to come out because something is wrong in your home and you have to be there to let them in.... I could go on and on!

Or better still - be responsible and go to work.

I hate it when our daughter calls in sick and she's not that sick. If I were her employer I would fire her sorry backside. Good jobs aren't easy to come by these days and I wouldn't dream of jeopardizing the one I've got but then I'm from a different generation where we didn't just take days off because we didn't feel like going to work.

You are allowed "mental days" as part of calling in sick. It's legal too, and you shouldn't need a shrink to write you a note for excuse. You could be honest and say you need the day off or else you're afraid that someday soon you'll come in there with a gun and go crazy.

I sometimes go for the "bad food story" and midway through say "I gotta go" and fake dry heaves as I'm hanging up the phone.

I like your style. lol. Great ideas!
I also like the "mental day" Idea. My aunt talked about that once. About how mental days are allowed. Except for word would get out, and I'd be known as the "crazy" or something.

I'm still debating whether or not I'm going to call in. I'd really like to. FOR SURE. It's just been a horrible day there, and I dont wish to go back there in like 12 hours. Plus, we're going to see fireworks tonight, and I wont get to bed at a decent time. bleh...
I'll feel so horrible if I do call in.

I've only called in 'fake' to work 1 or 2 times - I'd always use the 'I'm sick - or have the flu' type thing.

But I usually hate doing that, or being sick from work for real, cuz when I get back to work, my desk is a mess of things that went on the day before, and catching up is a BIG pain!

Seeing as how I've been horribly sick
the past two days (and on my vacation/holiday days no less
), I would much rather take the work than staying home sick. Now I just have to pray that I get better by Thursday when my guy has a trip planned for my birthday (destination unknown). All I know if that I will see the ocean for the first time and it's on the west coast - if I get better. So...anyways....just be happy you have to pretend you're sick.

Where I work at, if you call in the day before or the day after a holiday, then you don't get paid for it!!! We have 5 sick days every 6 months. If you go over the 5 days, even though you might have sick time built up, you go on a Step 1. It takes 90 days for that to roll off. If you call in during that time, then it is a Step 2 with an additional 90 days. If you call in again the it is a Step 3 with the additional days and after that, you are terminated. I have gone as far as a step 2. I was sick alot in January but all my steps rolled off as of July 1. I haven't called in since January.

I wanted to call in last week when it was super busy. (I work for a student loan company, and friday alone, 9000+ people called in the lock in the interest rates before it increased on July 1. It was sooooo slow yesterday.. LOL

Just say you were up all night because you did not feel well and are now totally exhaused. I took what I called a mental health day the other week - if we don't use them we loose them.

Besides I usually don't call in anymore - that is what e-mail is for!!

I have to agree with Yosemite... As someone with chronic health issues I only call in when I am very ill ( like I cannot leave the bathroom or have a temp of 100+)...

I think it's fair to call in sick when you're overstressed or need a break for your mental health. Who said sick days were only for physical illnesses anyways?
Life's too short to put your work ahead of your mental health!

When I used to work, I would go to work sometimes not feeling too well physically, but other times, I called in sick because I was overstressed (either from work or from personal problems). I was lucky I had a good boss and I didn't have to prove I needed a day off.... I just had to not abuse the priviledge.

If you need a medical certificate, that's more complicated... but if you have access to a psychologist or therapist, you can go to them and explain that you are stressed. If not, a general practitioner might work too.

Where I work it really doesn't matter if you call in sick because it's really up to your manager. My manager is great, as long as you have the time she doesn't care if you call off or not. I actually called in last thursday, because it was after my cat, lemur, died and I just didn't feel like going into work. There was one person who was down at the beach this weekend and she called in and said she was going to stay an extra two days and called in on Monday, since we had to work monday. I usually only call off, or take full days if I am really sick or I am on vacation. I'd rather go to work for half a day and get off early......since we are able to use partial time.

If I were an employer I wouldn't believe anyone who called in sick on July 5th... I would assume they partied to much the night before and woke up with a hangover

I've seen it happen so many times here at work when we have a public holiday and they usually ring in on the tuesday and say they've had food poison.

Yeah right does this chick have stupid stamped on her forehead

I'm also a firm believer in tempting fate as well and would never say it was a health issue

Well I work in a nursing home and unfortunately we have to have coverage 24-7 because our people have to be taken care of. And I only call in when I think I am sick enough that I will jepordize my residents health. Once I went to work and I was so sick that I was vomitting like literally every 10 minutes and my boss wouldn't let me leave because she needed a certain number of workers even though I could barely hold my head up. and so I only call in when I have to. Now a few months later the whole nursing home was on quarentine because all of our residents had the stomach flu. And I ended up getting it I came into work and walked across the building to the bathroom was very sick, and the nurse said you can go back and forth and I said I am sick. And my charge nurse looked at me and said go home you can't stay. And I begged her to let me stay because they were shorthanded and I wanted my residents to be taken care of and she refused and later I was glad of it cause I got sick like five times waiting on my dad to come back to the nursing home to get me. And its just a 15-30 minute drive. So I personally only call in when I have to.

That's true...you might have to provide a doctor's note if you do want to get paid. Otherwise they might count it towards a vacation day (unless your employer works with PTOs...then you're good either way).
