Hello all,
My kitten babies are 4 weeks old today. Mom is still nursing them. And still very protective. Not as much as she used to be, but she will still pull them out of the box they are in and lay them on the floor right beside my bed. That's not the problem. My problems are three-fold. I am trying to start to wean them onto soft food. I put a little on a spoon yesterday and let them sniff it, they ALL turned their heads away. No interest whatsoever. And on top of that, I left a little bit of food in a dish in their box, and mom ate it all!!! I tried to get her to leave the room but she scratched at the door to get in so hard she left marks. Now, everything I read so far states they should be getting weaned now. But at this rate, I'm not gonna have any luck. Mom doesn't seem to have any interest in weaning them. Also, if I leave her locked in the room with them while I am out, won't this make the transitions harder? Does anyone have any suggestions?

Second problem is fleas. Mom must have had them when we took her in as a stray. We only had her 3 days before she gave birth. I've tried washing them in Dove detergent, and while that got 2 adult fleas off of one kitten, I noticed another one crawling around on her. I change the blankets constantly, and I don't have carpet, just hardwood, and that I sweep and dustbust all the time too. I now have a couple flea bites on my ankles and I'm really scared that I will have an infestation before long.

Third is the dreaded litter box. The family is in my bedroom. Mom's food and litter is also in there. The babies are in a box in one area, and mom's stuff is in another. Should I attempt to put a little container of litter in the box they are in? They do get out and run around, but I don't like them to go too far and especially under my bed, which they tend to gravitate to.

WHEW!!!! I'm really sorry to have written a book. This is all new to me and I'm here at work worried sick about everything.

First of all stop worrying, they are pretty young to be on solid food right now. They will be more than happy to get off mom's milk bar in a few weeks, but don't rush them. Let Mom cat stay with them, don't lock her out of the room. Instead provide her with a ledge or someplace in the room where she can go to get away from them at her preference. She will show them how to use the litter pan- ideally, they should be adopted out to new homes at 12 weeks old. Sadly, many people tire of kittens before that and adopt them out long before they are ready; litter pan manners, socialization, and separation anxiety at a minimum.

You need to get a handle on the flea problem. Contact your vet- fleas can kill kittens quite easily.

Hey KS....weaning is a process...some kittens catch on quite soon and others take longer. The best thing is to provide mom with lots of moist kitten food and dry kitten food...at some point, the kittens will get curious and start to eat mom's food and that is when the weaning process truly begins in earnest. I used low plastic plates for mom's food to make it easier for the kittens to get to.

As far as the litterbox....same deal....kittens will become curious about mom's litterbox and that is when they start to grasp that they are meant to go bathroom there. I used xerox box tops for my foster kittens..but you may want to use aluminum pans.

As far as the fleas go...it is best to work with your vet as there may be a product that the vet recommends that is safe for these kittens.

Ditto, 4 weeks is young to worry too much about weaning as long as Mom is still nursing them.

I would definitely call the vet about the fleas, the kittens can get anaemic quickly from blood loss. I have used Advantage on nursing mom rescues and have had no problems (NOT on the kittens), but you need to talk to your vet and see what they recommend.

Cosmo had fleas and I called the vets and they told me to come pick up a little thing of Revolution that is safe for kittens. It's a liquid that you put between their shoulder blades and it's absorbed into their blood stream so any fleas that bite them die and I believe it prevents their eggs from hatching as well. Cosmo was 6 weeks when we gave it to him so not sure if it will be safe for 4 week olds but you can always call the vet and try

Thanks for all the advice. I went to the vet last night and was given some tablets called Capstar which kills adult fleas in 30 minutes. We had a heck of a time giving the babies the pills, but managed without too many scratches. And the fleas started falling off in 1/2 hour. I am also looking into something called Program, which apparently stops eggs from hatching but can't seem to find out if mine are too young yet. I have been washing all blankets like crazy and cleaning the floors, I even got on my hands and knees and washed my hardwood floors with vinegar and water, for the third time this week.

I tried the feeding thing again, and the litter, no luck. Will just have to be patient I guess (not one of my stronger traits). Momma has no desire to leave them alone, so it's for the better I suppose.

Thanks again everyone.
