My wife was a lifetime cat-lover and we adopted two gorgeous long haired kittens three years ago.

Since then we have married and had a child who unfortunately has allergies to the cat fur. I found out that I am also allergic to the two beauties, but was willing to put up with the situation on my own personal front.

My wife however wants to find a new home for the cats as now the child gets everywhere in the house, contact is unavoidable.
I would like to two cats to stay together since they have grown up with each other since they were 2 months old.

I live in the Philadelphia area (King of Prussia), can anyone help in finding my cats a new home???

Can't you put your kid on allergy meds? I mean, lots of us here and lots of people who have cats and work in rescues and stuff all have allergies but I would give my cats up for anything. Plus you aren't allergic to the fur, you are allergic to a protein in the dander and some cats have it differently and therefore you might not be allergic to all cats. I don't know, I just couldn't give up my babies just because I was sneezing and had a stuffy nose and watery eyes, especially since there are so many allergy meds and shots out there available...Good luck though!

First...you need to look at your adoption contract to see whether there is any clause that says that you will return the cats to the shelter or rescue group if you can no longer care for them. Most rescue groups will take back an adopted cat to be rehomed.

Second, if you have determined that you are not required to take the cats back..then I would follow the advice in the "how to find homes for homeless pets" PDF that you can find here:

http://www.natewood.net/Rehome.html

It has information on how to place an ad and a sample contract.

I can emphathize with your situation. 2 of my sons are allergic. I hate to say this, but we decided to treat the boys instead of getting rid of the cats.

The boys know to keep the cats away from their faces (they don't like the reaction, either!) and the cats don't sleep on their bedding. We also had a whole-house air cleaner added to the furnace (an April Aire 5000) - which is wonderful! In addition, we had the duct worked cleaned by a reputable duct cleaning company - expensive, but worth it to have done right (not one of those $100 specials). The cats also get bathed every couple of weeks.

If the boys do get a reaction now, they take Benadryl. They were also on Beconase (sp?) on an as-needed basis (nose spray). As well, they both have Albuteral (sp?) inhalers.

That is exactly what I would do. My dad was allergic for years and we didn't have cats. Then one day we tried a Himalayan because they don't usualy spark the same sort of allergic reaction as other breeds do and my dad has been fine. My mom has since taken in 2 more cats and my dad has gotten over the allergies I guess. But I could never give up my poor kitties due to something as common and treatable as an allergy

I am sending {{{prayers and vibes}}} for rehoming your cats to a safe place.
Until then, or maybe
instead of, please give your wife a big hug for being a good mom and THEN offer to assist in making your home a much better environment for your child by doing the following: reduce ALL irritants, including scented fabric softeners, scented detergents, shampoos, soaps; reduce or eliminate the use of bleach; CHANGE CAT LITTER to unscented (best value - chicken feed "laying mash" or "layer krumbles/krackettes; or JonnyCat unscented clay or Arm&Hammer Fragrance Free clumping); if possible, get rid of all carpeting; and, this is big - have the AC system in the house professionally cleaned & filters replaced!
My sis & niece had terrible allergies, despite a move from CA to TN, and the culprit (of course) was thought to be her cats. Fortunately, her pediatric allergist is a big cat fan, did investigative work & had my sis get the AC taken care off, plus new dry wall in the bathrooms & wood floors installed & VOILA! no more shots needed and very few asthma attacks!!! And they adopted 2 more cats, and over a year later, things are still going great!!
I also have asthma & the scents of detergents & cat litter are very detrimental to me. I have found that being around any combination of triggers will make being around yet another trigger even more harmful than usual. For instance, if I am shopping with someone wearing a certain perfume, then going to the household cleaners aisle, or near a display of cat litters, I often get an attack & it sounds like seals have invaded the store

Please keep us updated & welcome to TCS!!

I had a close friend who grew up being told that she was deathly allergic to cats. However, it turned out that she was allergic to the dust from the kitty litter. Once we changed to a wheat litter, she could visit without becoming sick.
