My 3 month old egyptian mau was diagnosed with Yellow Jaundice, Anemic, a Bactereal Infection, and Elevated White Blood Count. He has stopped eating and now he won't drink. I have only had him for a week. Has anyone every heard of a kitten recovering from this.

What sort of treatments and prognosis did your veterinarian discuss with you?
Please elaborate!

There is always hope, but you have to keep him hydrated and eating. Is he currently hospitalized or are they relying on you to do the syringe feeding and sub-Q hydration?

ETA- Are you in contact with your breeder? They would be an invaluable source of information and support system. And as he has only been out of their care for one week I can't imagine them not wanting to be included in the information gathering and decision process.

And what caused the jaundice would be helpful to know.

Kittens can be remarkably resilient and can get over astonishing things. My baby girl was anemic too due to a serious flea infestation as a baby and you'd never know it now! She also got very sick after her spay with some sort of virus, and got all better from that too. With proper vet care there is certainly hope, especially if this is all caused by an infection which will start to get better with the antibiotics.

How sad for you. You've hardly been able to get to know him he's been so sick. Please definitely try to contact the breeder! Is he not from a breeding program?

Elevated white blood counts are usually indicative of infection. If he has a bacterial infection, that can account for an elevated WBC. What type of infection does he have?

Jaundice is usually very serious. However, the treatments and prognosis depends on the degree of jaundice and the cause of the jaundice. Liver disease can cause jaundice or certain types of anemias can also cause jaundice. The cause and treatment will depend on the etiology of the jaundice. Ask your vet to explain this further.

Anemia is a low red blood cell count and is often nonspecific. Certain infections, conditions, and diseases can be associated with anemia. The bigger question, is what is the underlying infection or disease that led to his jaundice and anemia?

Best of luck with your little guy!

A cat's liver function can fail quickly if it stops eating. Please make sure to contact your vet again. Also try yummy smelly food to get him eating.

Good luck.

Any news?
I get emotionally invested when I see questions like this and then if I never hear again I am left wondering...

I know what you mean, I feel the same way - though sometimes I wonder if I'm better off not knowing.

Apparently meat based human baby food (make sure there's no onion in the ingredients as well) is good for dehydrated kitties. It's got lots of fluids in it, and kittites love it.

Speak to your vet about whether you can try that.
