Will my cat get lonely?

As many of you know, one of my cats, Lemur, passed away last week. I have a question regarding my other cat, Monkey. She is our second cat so she has always had another cat to keep her company ever since she was a kitten. She is now by herself during the day at home, until I get home in the afternoon. As soon as I come in the door she runs up to me and wants a lot of attention and she acts like she was very lonely during the day. She is only 2 years old, so she is still very playful and full of energy...I just feel bad if she is at home by herself during the day.

Do you think that she will be ok by herself, or do I need to get another cat in the near future?

I'm really sorry about your Lemur passing away.

If it were me, I would definitely get another cat. Two are no more work than one, really, but the benefits are great. Your girl would appreciate a sibling, I'm sure.

I agree. But maybe pick a weekend or whatever so that you have plenty of time to get them relaxed and introduced before you have to leave them on their own together. It might help if you can adopt a kitty that is from a multi cat house, so that they'll both appreciate the company.

Should I try to get a cat that is around the same age.....since Monkey is 2 she might not do well with a kitten....

I would. I would also suggest a former feral if possible, as they often tend to slot into a house hold which already has cats very well. The shelter might be able to give you an idea of which cats tend to get along best with others. Avoid any that have to be on their own, obviously.

The added benefit of adopting an older cat is that kittens have an easier time of getting a home as well.

I'm sorry that you lost your Lemur.

If you think that you are ready for another cat, I would say go for it. Older cats have a hard time getting placed, especially now that kitten season is here. I would necessarily say that you want a cat that is 2 years old, but from an age range of 1-5 years old. There are some really laid back 1 year old cats. I always find it helpful(being a shelter volunteer) when a potential adoptee comes in, tells me about their cat(age, personality, etc.) & tells me what they think would be a best fit personality wise. Consider if you want a declawed cat(there are TONS in the shelter here).

Don't look over the "special needs" cat, either. My Damita(foster) is special needs & you wouldn't hardly know it if her eyes didn't look funny.

Since your cat is young and used to another cat I would say it wouldn't be a bad idea. I think a kitten would be fine with a two year old.. as long as they are introduced properly and supervised for the first few weeks. I intro Rocky when Zakk was almost 1, and the other kittens when Zakk was 2 1/2 and Rocky 1 1/2. I think a kitten or a cat that has been around other cats should be fine.

I would suggest getting another cat. If she has lived a lot of her life with another companion it would be best to get another one. Get one that is known to be great with other cats. Ask around for types of breeds that are great with another animal around.

While a 2 year old cat would probably be okay with either a cat or a kitten, I would suggest a cat if you aren't home during the day, since kittens require more time & attention.

I agree with the person who posted that adults are harder to place... as a fellow rescue group volunteer, this is definitely the trend we experience, too.

Good luck, and keep us posted!

I am sorry for your loss. I think that Monkey will do well having another feline friend around because she is still relatively young and would probably adjust easier than an older cat.
