She may have an eating disorder called PICA -the desire & eatng of non-nutritional ,non-edible items. I worked with individuals with it & was amazed at what they would eat or try to consume-coins ,doll heads,pens,tacksto name a few items that showed up on xrays-required surgical removal-

I've heard of pica, but never to that degree. I think its very common in pregnancy--mostly characterized by the desire to eat ice, lick chalk, etc. I also knew a small child who licked wood, it turns out that these forms of pica often are symptoms of anemia. You would have to be really desperate to eat nails. Perhaps, someone was sneaking them into her food? How bizarre.

She could have been doing it in her sleep.

wow! I have heard of pica, too but never heard about it like that. I am glad she is going to be okay, though.

I once saw a special on the discovery channel about this guy that not only ate glass but also an entire bicycle. It was very odd and off putting.
