Hello to all!

As my username indicates, I am a "dad" to two cats and a dog. My cats are Alex and Fletcher. Alex is "my little girl." She has been around here for close to twelve years. Fletcher showed up about five years ago. He's from Canada. The "back story" for all of my kids will come later.

Jack the dog is a Jack Russell Terrier mix. All three get along great. All three are adopted. In otherwords, someone else couldn't keep them. This is their home now. My name is Bruce. I'm their new dad!

I found this site while researching reasons why Fletcher was going a bit weird on me. I was concerned and confused. He was lathargic, losing weight and constantly around either the water dish or the cat box. I didn't notice this as a behavior change right away. It was just one of those things that one has to put together, like connecting the dots. Last weekend, it became clear that something was not quite right with him. He got to see the vet on Wednesday.

The blood work and urinalysis came back. The good news is that Fletcher doesn't have any number of things wrong with him that would make me opt to put him down right away. What he does have is treatable. The bad news is that he has Type I diabetes. There is no cure. Only control. And for anyone who has diabetes, you know the drill. For Fletcher, he gets two units of insulin injected two times a day. He just got started on this regimen this past Friday. Guess who gets to do this duty?

After informing my regular cat sitter of what's up with Fletcher, I guess I won't be going anywhere without the cat, any time soon. She quit.

I don't want this introduction to get too long. I'm just saying hello and sharing why I'm here. If anyone has questions about diabetes in cats, we'll try to figure out which forum is most appropriate for further discussion on this topic.

Alex, Flecher, Jack and Bruce.

Welcome!

I'm sorry about the diabetes. There are plenty of people here that have dealt with it since it's fairly common in cats. I'm sure you have probably gone through/going through the frustrating period of getting the right dosage of insulin down, but it's great that Fletcher's disease can be treated!

Welcome to TCS Dad2_2cats1dog

Fletcher is very lucky to have you as a dad, a lot of people are not able to deal with diabetes, especially with a cat

Poor Fletcher - this must take some getting used to for you all. I bet you could do without your pet-sitter quitting to. I hope you find someone who can cope with Fletcher's Diabetes soon
