i caught an adorable stray cat today, hes missing some fur on his head, not too much tho, i can tell its from another cat scratching him, and hes a bit scrawny, were gonna bring him to the humane society tomorrow, but im wondering if his chances of getting adopted are good, hes not vicious or anything, he let me pet him and such, but he looks older, and did not like being brought inside at all. thanks

I brought in an older stray too. She was hesitant about me, but after lots of attention and food, she was the best! All of my friends loved her because she wa so sweet! Hopefully, after a few days, he'll get used to being inside! If you want to keep him, make sure to take him to the vet to get checked for worms, FIV and other serious diseases! I put a towel and some catnip in the carrier to make the trip easier. Be sure to wait until he's used to you before making himm undergo the stress of a vet! Also, make sure that he has been neutered! If not, get it done ASAP! He will be more gentle and not go wild trying to get to a female cat! Good luck!

I agree! I would get him vet checked as soon as possible, though. And do get him neutered. Then you can decide if he would do well at the shelter, or if he would be better off with you rehoming him with a friend of yours. Or if he really doesn't adjust to being an inside kitty, once he is neutered you can let him back outside.

Fighting for ferals in NW NJ!
Channy - what did you decide to do? I don't know about in Essex, but here many "Humane societies" - and even so-called "no kill" shelters actually do put down ferals. The no-kill shelters get away with it by "not killing" "adoptable" cats. But when older strays or ferals are involved, they are often determined to be unadoptable.

It is VERY possible to socialize older strays and ferals. It takes patience and willingness, but it is ultimately one of the most rewarding aspects of rescuing. If you decide to keep this kitty, there's lots of information to be shared about how to manage it!

Best of luck,

Laurie

Yes. And especielly if you do have own fully vaccinated friendly cat - or several... The socialization is usually easier. Often much easier. Especially the shy semiferals are very grateful... the success chances very good.
