I'm not sure where to post this. If it's in the wrong place, can a mod move it please.

I am curious if there are any purebreds that are polydactyl or if that's strictly a moggie trait. I would think it would be just moggies because I don't know how the polydactyl trait would get into a purebred blood line.

Doesn't the polydactyl come from inbreeding or if the parents are polydactyls? So if wouldn't really matter if the cat was purebred or not, it would just have to be inbred or from poly parents.

I had always understood that bob tailed and tailless breeds are more apt to carry the polydactyl gene.
Possibly related to the bob/tailless gene?

All breeds of cats that are registered with the CFA, cannot be polydactyls. It's a disqualifying trait.

My understanding is that no registered purebreds can by polydactyls.

For what it's worth, Maine Coons are naturally polys, but the trait is bred out of them. You won't find a registered cat with extra toes. Personally, I think the trait should be allowed in Maine Coons, but that's just my opinion.

I'm not sure if it comes from inbreeding or not. I'm pretty sure it's genetic though. Polly and her littermates are all polydactyls. You purebreed owners are missing out
Just kidding.

Hope Hacker......you are right. We have two Pixie-Bobs and one has the extra toes and the other doesn't. Someone else said that it is a genetic trait and they are right also as is the bob-tail.

Winter Hawk

P.S. The Pixie-Bobs are pure bred cats but CANNOT be registered in CFA, only in TICA.

You don't want that trait in a purebred line, so as far as I know, there are no current purebred breeds that have that in the lines.

It would get in the lines if a polydactal was accidently bred into the lines.
