I'm not sure if this belongs in the strays thread since the cat I am referring to technically has an owner, so I apologize if I've put this in the wrong place. But, I have a cat who hangs around my house. He is very sweet and loving. I had been feeding him for months because I thought he was a stray. I found out a couple of weeks ago that he belongs to some neighbors down the street. Recently, over the past month, this cat has been getting skinnier and skinnier and his coat is not as shiny as it was. I have still been feeding him and he eats here all the time. I am wondering if any of you have any advice on what may be wrong with him. I feel confident that my neighbors do not really take care of him and I don't think they would ever take him to the vet. I can't afford to do it being that I have 2 cats and a dog of my own. But, I hate to see this poor thing go so downhill. He is really the sweetest thing and I would most definitely take him in if I could. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

This kitty really needs to go to the Vet for bloodwork. It sounds as if his family is very negligent and he is claiming you! Thank you for stepping to take care of him.
Let's move this to Health.

Sounds like he definately needs to see a vet. It would be impossible to diagnose him over the internet.

Have you looked for low cost clinics in your area? Some of them are really cheap. I would just take him in. If he is always at your house anyways and it sounds like his owners don't care much... Unless there was a way they could find out it was you that took him. Seeing as they don't care much, they may just assume he ran off or got killed and never even go looking for him.

Approach the neighbors and tell them your concern that the cat needs a vet. Perhaps the two of you can come up with something. They may simply not know he's ill.
