New kitty problems?

So I just got a new kitty, and he's sleeping in my lap as I write this. He's wild and was born in my neighbors barn, the mother was found dead on the side of the road, and I got him before they took him to the SPCA. I think he's around four to six weeks old. He seems healthy, although I know I still have to get his vaccinations in a couple weeks.
Anyway, I do have a few concerns. First off, I don't know what the best thing I should be feeding him is. He can eat whole food, but has a bit of trouble with it, so I've been putting some hot water on it and letting it get soft, before I feed him it... he likes it just fine but I think I could do better for him, if anyone has any suggestions? I heard somewhere that milk can give him worms, and I was wondering if that was true.

As well, I think my kitty is constipated...? He's learned to use his litter box already, the first day I got him, (I didn't even have to teach him because he's so god-dammed clever) but he seems to have some trouble uh... getting it out. Taking a crap, I'm not so good with medical terms. He makes these cute little squeaks, and has to take a breather half way through? I think it might have something to do with the food I'm feeding him, or is it normal for his age?

I am going to move this to the Pregnant Cats & Kittens Forum for you. You will get more answers there.

I didnt have this problem with mine, but I have heard others talking about having to stimulate them. They use a warm cotton ball or wash cloth, and I believe you just kind of wipe very gently back there until they go. Chances are his mother was doing this for him.
They are the ones who usually decide they dont want to do it anymore, then they teach their babies how to use the litter, or even the barn floor in your case...

Can you get to a pet store and get some canned kitten food? Probably some soft food would be best to loosen him up. Also, don't give him cow's milk, not because it would give him worms (it won't) but it can upset his stomach as many cats have a bad reaction to the lactose in it. Get either KMR milk, designed for cats, at the petstore or you can use fresh or canned goats milk for him. If he is really straining and seems in distress I would call the vet for advice. You are great for taking this little one in and I hope he grows up a healthy and happy cat.

Welcome....first of all...I would get him to the vet. Even at his young age, he really should be seen by a vet to assure the fact that he is ok. Most kittens have worms...so he will definately need to be dewormed when he receives his shots. Cows milk can cause kittens to have issue with diarhea...which is why you should either give him Goat's Milk or KMR.

I have easy access to goats milk, so that won't be a problem. Thanks. I guess I'll go out and get him some canned food soon. I'm also not sure how much would be the right amount to feed him. I've been offering him food and water throughout the day and he seems to just eat whenever he's hungry, but I guess it would be a better idea to have a feeding schedual? At least while he's still young?
