I've tried twice now, and both times the plants inexplicably died while they were still tiny. I used a sizable pot, Miracle Gro, and turned the plantpot once every few days. Can someone who's successfully grown a catnip plant from seeds tell me what conditions they pulled it off with.

I have loads of it growing in the yard! Do you have a spot outside where you can start a plant?!? Maybe it would do better outside. (It seems like if it was inside, the cats would just eat it!)

Sorry, I never tried from seeds. I buy a small plant in the grocery store and keep it on the window sill. Oliver prunes it...and prunes it...and prunes it...it dies...I buy another one.

I keep it in a room that Pudge can't get into. The neighbors cats would probabbly eat it if it were outside.

I too have lots of it growing "wild" either in one of my perennial beds or in some other weedy spot. A couple of the cats keep it pruned for me!!

I grow it from seed. I really doubt its a plant that can be grown indoors or in a pot. Try planting it outside in a really sunny location. Many nurseries sell cat nip plants then all you have to do is plant it in the ground. My cats love Cat mint just as good as cat nip and they are very easy to grow. The roll in the cat Mint plants all the time.

Have you tried compost as opposed to Miracle Gro? It may make it thrive a bit more.

Hmmm...I will have to try that, and grow it outdoors, as that seems to be the general concensus on successfully growing it.

I've grown it indoors...(with the help of the gardening expertise of my friends). It grows very slowly, and I've only been successful growing it in a south facing window at work. I may try transplanting it outside though...but I would fear the neighbourhood kitties would like my yard too much!! :p

I actually have a long row of catnip & cat mint planted in the yard. I covered it with corn tunnels(most of you probably don't know what those are) so it's completely blocked from the cats getting into it. As it gets huge, it outgrows the tunnels & then the cats keep it pruned. Otherwise, I bring some inside a lot for the housecats & break some off for the ones outside, too.

The cats outside seem to prefer the cat mint to the cat nip. I dunno why?
