I don't have personal experience, but I did have a friend who was training to be a travel agent. The one thing I remember was that she got to go on several trips to resorts, that were paid for by the resorts. The resorts figured that this was the way to get the travel agents to recommend their resorts over the others.
I have a friend, who is a travel agent. Things are tight, right now. So many people are booking online and the airlines aren't paying commissions, any more. Most of the agencies that I know of are laying people off.
