I just went out to the kittens this morning and noticed that one was being a little lethargic. I checked him out and noticed that he was dehydrated. I have an appt with the vet at 2 for him, but I am concerned. He has had his first shots (is now 10 wks old), has not been out of the back room/garage and has had no contact with any other cats. Could it just be that he got off his food because of the heat? the other three are doing fine.

vet visit went well. perhaps I am just being a little paranoid, they found nothing to be concerned with. I bought him some chicken baby food and will make sure he gets some food into him, and try to keep him in a less stuffy area.

i am still not sure he is all ok. he does not have a temp but he still seems a little under the weather. I will keep my fingers crossed and keep an eye on him.

yeh, i think the vet was full of it. Little gus is still listless and not showing interest in food. I bottle fed him last night and just now but I will be bringing him back in. The vets main reason for thinking he was ok was that he had no temp and had not been throwing up or having diarhea. but something is definately up with the little guy. He does not seem uncomfortable when I touch his abdomen but I am concerned about some sort of blockage.
argh. wish us luck.

Twinka...keep us posted. I think it is only natural to want to do all we can to ensure the health of the animals in our care.

well i just got back from the clinic .. saw another vet. Gus has developed a new disturbing symptom.. his pupils are not identifically dilated. They checked him for feline leuk and he came back negative. they also found that he was not urinating. They drained his bladder, and then he went on his own (which the vet was pleased with). She thinks it is some sort of inflammation that is affecting his neurological system.. not a great thing, but it is treatable. We have steriods and antibiotics (possible toxoplasmosis (not sure why antibiotics since it is a parasite...). So we have treated him, and are setting up a little gus-spot for him where we can monitor him better.
all his sibs are clustered around him right now. they are great little kittens.

Good for you in taking him back. I hope he rallies and perks up. Are you supposed to be monitoring his urine output or how much he is eating?

well, he has his own box and own food so we can make sure the others do not contribute. I will bottle feed him some more if he does not eat on his own. he licked a little what I left out for him, but not a huge amount.
I realized that one change in his "life" this week was that we switched them over from the "yesterdays news" litter to scoopable to prepare them to go to their new homes. I am wondering if he had some issues with the new litter.

I never switch them to scoopable. I don't 100% believe that it is bad for kittens, but since I'm not sure and never heard what age is safe, I just stick with the clay litter and we tell the adopters to start with clay!

well, gus is doing poorly. I am trying to get food in him to maintain his hydration, and he fights me. I found out last night that the mom has roundworms, and that some of the symptoms that gus was expressing on friday before he got this sick are attributable to roundworm infestation. despite the fact that i deliberately asked the vet if this could be it, he said no. i think he was wrong, and we missed an important opportunity to treat gus before he progressed to where he is now. it breaks my heart. I am not sure he is going to make it despite my best efforts and I am so angry that the vet did not listen. i realize that these things happen but less than a week ago i had four healthy kittens almost ready to go to their homes and now I am have one seriously ill kitten. anyhow...
we will do our best... i am just not sure it will be enough for him anymore...
