Is it ok to feed kitten food to adult cats? Will they receive enough nutrition? I bought Maxximum Nutrition in the kitten formula - they only had the adult formula in great big bags. I figure it's got to be better than many of the other foods sold at Wal-mart (though I'm still suspect of it because it's rumored to be owned by Purina which has by-products at the top of its ing. list), kitten formula or not. The only thing I worry about is it maybe not keeping her full, or not providing enough nutrients. I plan to mix some Purina Complete in with it until that is all gone, so she will have some adult food. You guys talked me into the Maxx
, so we'll see how it goes! My cat is pretty sensitive, so if it really is no better than Purina, it will be evidenced in her digestion and her appearance. I swear her coat looks so much shinier and sleeker on Iams than say Nine Lives. Even Iams (whoever said this on my thread yesterday was right) has by-products as the second ingredient! I'm still not exactly sure what the difference is b/w chicken by-products and chicken/chicken meal. I've heard that companies will use chicken feet or beaks or even roadkill (??), so that's why I'm trying to find a better food for Maisey. I'll report back after she's been on Maxx for awhile to tell you all my thoughts on it.

The best food (for both adults and kittens) have around 30 to 35% protein, 20 to 25% fat, 5% fiber, 10% moisture, less than 10% of ash, and around 0.2% of taurine.

Nowadays on the market there is a labelling frenzy and you can't really tell "adult" and "kitten" formulas anymore. Reading the percentages on the labels give you a much better idea than a generic "adult" or "kitten" label.

I would expand that protein be at least 30% up to 40or 50% fat 15-30 % fiber 3-5 %, 6-7% ash ... .15-.2 taurine //

Talk with the vet ... Mine gave me the okay since the kitten was two % higher in protein and fat and my girl is just 2 yrs

CHicken is 66% h2o ( the label reads the raw ingrediants wt) ... chicken meal is the chn minus the h2o and much of the fat ( 1lb chn meal = 5lbs of fresh chicken) .... I like to see both on the label but that is hard

chicken by products is the heads ft intestines undeveloped eggs .. and yes chn by product meal is also without water(;()

Thanks - I'm curious now to see how Maxx stands up to what I've been feeding her. I've never paid much attention to that section before - just the ingredients list...
