Hi - I am new to this, but hoping someone can help me out. My 2 year old kitty, Tangerine, has been in the hospital for 2 weeks as of tomorrow. He had a urinary blockage, they inserted a catether and when they took it out, he blocked all over again, needless to say, doctor tried again and he blocked again. We had a surgery performed on him last friday where it will make his opening larger so he can pass his urine. He came home last saturday and we had to rush him back in on sunday, he developed a terrible terrible infection. So now we are fighting the infection... he will hopefully come home tomorrow...
Here are my questions...
1) I read on this site that this is very common in orange kittys... is that right?
2) What do i feed him now? Wet food/dry food?
3) Do you think this will shorten his life from all this trauma?

1) I think it is more common in males, not necessarily orange ones

2) for any urinary problems, a wet diet is best. Feed as much wet as possible and cut back or stop with the dry unless the vet gives you a prescription diet.

3) I don't think so, but it is really hard to say

I just miss my kitty... i hope so bad when he comes home tomorrow he is OK. I have the day off friday and will stay will him all weekend... he just gets automatically depressed when i put the elizabethan collar on, so I like to keep it off, but I have to watch him with his stiches.
It's strange, I have 3 cats and have always fed them iams dry food, so I will do what the doc tells me about diet... (tanny can stand to lose a few pounds)
Oh yeah, the other 2 cats are females and they totally shunned him when he was home briefly!! Hope that changes when I can clean him and get the nasty smell off of him.

I wouldn't bathe him or anything, he is already under enough stress as it is. Use a kitty wipe to clean him off. To make your cats remember each other faster (they are just reacting to the smell, so you have to make them all smell the same, don't just clean the one that was away) Use pure vanilla extract, a dab on their head, neck and base of tail. Or at least if you use the pet wipes on one, use it on all of them.

I have heard the thing about the orange cats but my cat is grey and white and we are fighting this problem right now also.

All vets are different. My vet strictly wants my Baby on Science Hill S/d dry food. Nothing else. I would say ask your vet. Here that food runs about $13 for a 4 pound bag.

3) Do you think this will shorten his life from all this trauma?

My vet mention nothing about it. I do know this is a serious condition. I am sure they are doing all they can to help him. I guess I should feel lucky. My cat unstopped the first time. But it is common to stop back up. He did warn me that Simon might not be finished with blockage problems. Good luck and I will pray for your baby.
