So, are you saying that it's the exact same food in the Purina bags as the Maxx bags, or that the Maxx food is just made by Purina? If it's the same food, that would be fraudulent. If they're the same price, I'd be suspicious.

I keep my dry food in canisters that are kitty proof. Luckily I have lots of shelf space to keep food, but I don't usually buy any bags over 8 lbs... Anyway, I haven't tried the maxximum but i may at some point. I don't think it is fraudelant of the companies to manufacture store brand food.. that's the way the generic business works.. Lots of stuff is exactly the same, but the company selling it doesn't put any money into advertising.
I have seen the natural life stuff and maxximum at my walmart here in CT.
Natural Life just showed up recently. I tried the wet but after the first few cans my cats lost interest (which is typical with anything good for them). The dry didn't look to great.. for some reason I thought the first ingredient was a byproduct or something.. Never checked the max ingredients, just have gone on what I have heard here and think it may be on par with iams or maybe purina one as far as quality.

I think it's "Natural Life" you're thinking of. I'd feed it myself, because it's great quality, but sold at Wal-Mart. No by-products or stuff like that.

It's fradulent if they're taking Purina Complete and putting it in a sack with a totally different ingredients list on it, marketing it as a higher-quality food. I did a little research on Maxx, and find it interesting that the label doesn't list the manufacturer, and I found several comments from people who'd investigated it and found nothing. There wasn't even a plant code listed. So, I don't know if the Purina rumor is true... I have read several comments about positive results of Maxx - healthy, shiny coats for ex. I'm still skeptical. Why do they want to keep the manufacturer's name unknown? I guess they're afraid that if they say it's Purina, people will assume it's the exact same formula stuffed in Maxx bags with higher-quality ingredients on the label and a higher price, and rightfully so.

I know that Iams has by-products in their food, but I think it's further down the list. If I'm not mistaken corn meal is one of the top ingredients - I think it also has lamb meal. Those are good, right? Maxx has chicken listed as it's top ing., but what part of the chicken is it? What is the difference b/w chicken and chicken by-products? I know that chicken by-products is better than say animal by-products because you know what it is. But chicken meal and just plain chicken are usually better than by-products, right? Though, I'm unclear about what puts the meat product in each category. Maybe i should just move on a farm and process the animals myself. Geez, it would be so much easier than these food guessing games!

Hey, quick question about Purina One. How is it different than Purina Complete (the original food in the blue sack) - is it similar to Iams, by-products being lower on the list? I think we're thinking of the same product - the newer formulas in the shiny sacks? For some reason, I thought they were called something else, but I'm tired so ignore me.

Thank you all for the info and suggestions!

Ok, so I had to go in walmart again today and decided to check out the kitty isle, well they've added a bunch of new stuff to it, so now we're finally getting some decent things! They finally also added the Maxx stuff. Since I've heard so many great things about it, I might give it a try.

Who's wet food is made by 9 lives? I know Purina's is Friskies, cause it has their name on the cans I just got Skittles.

I just checked the Maxximum ingredients for their kitten formula and I saw "animal digest" a ways down on the ingredient list. I'm assuming that's animal intestines?? Yuck! At least it wasn't one of the first few ingredients though.

I don't know about the dry food. It seems similar to the Pro Plan kitten food, which is not a bad food to begin with.

Their wet foods have exactly the same ingredients and composition as 9Lives. Not great, I know....but the best wet food for someone who insists on a wet-food only diet but cannot afford it.

Animal Digest is the material which results from chemical and/or enzymatic hydrolysis of clean and undecomposed animal tissue. The animal tissues used shall be exclusive of hair, horns, teeth, hooves and feathers, except in such trace amounts as might occur unavoidably in good factory practice and shall be suitable for animal feed.

In other words, it is the same stuff a cat would eat if she were to have gone out and caught a rabbit or mouse - only cleaner and processed into a form which is easily mixed into the food before it is baked.
