A Wal-mart food mentioned here...

A few months back, someone mentioned getting a food from Wal-mart that has good ingredients with a low price - but, I don't remember the brand. I've been looking for a new food for my cat. She has always been barfy, but I assumed it was just hairballs (she often throws up hair with her food). I've tried several hairball remedies (she's not tame enough to brush), but she still goes through barfy spells. Someone mentioned to me that it may be the food, too. The vet was not alarmed since it's not very often - every couple of weeks she will go through barfy spells, trying for a few days to get all that hair out of there. She seemed to do very well on Iams - when I went to Purina, she got worse. Maybe it was just a coincidence, but I want to get her on a higher-quality food. I was thinking the Wal-mart one didn't have by-products, at least not as a top ingredient. I guess chicken meal, lamb meal, is best? Can someone recommend a food that I can buy at Wal-mart or Kroger? There isn't a good pet store nearby. Thanks!

Hi,

I remember that post.... the food is called Maxxximum or Maxxximum Nutrition or something like that. I glanced at the ingredients list last time I was at Wal-Mart and I don't remember seeing any by-products, but I don't remember about the grains. I remember it being very inexpensive! I would love to hear people's opinion about it since I've been curious about trying it too....

WalMart's Maxximum Nutrition is one of the best foods out there in it's price range.

If hairballs are a problem for your cat, I would suggest a thorough brushing every day and a little Laxatone during flare-ups.

Thanks. I guess Laxatone is similar to Cat Lax or Petromalt (a brown gel)? Also, will any pet brush do for brushing, or is there a specific kind that is best? I remember someone saying they use a fine-tooth comb. My cat is kind of a spaz, but I combed her today, and she actually liked it! It did remove some loose hair.

I think I might try this Maxximum Nutrition before I go back to Iams.

I love WalMart any way and I normally give my baby nine lives. I mean I don't know how good or bad people think that is, but I usually give that to my Sheba, but I will definetly try the Max... Nutrition and see how she likes. It is obvious she prefers the wet over the dry any how because she gobbles the wet down and lets the dry sit for hours and hours until she just has to eat. We either go through that or having to wet her dry food a little. I tried that yesterday and she ate it furiously so... Is this Max. Nutrition wet or dry or both?

I've been using the Maxximum Nutrition Kitten formula for Ruby and she seems to love it. Here are the first few ingredients: chicken, chicken meal, brewer's rice, fish meal, animal fat, corn meal, dried egg product, dried beet pulp... I see no out and out byproduct mentioned.

In case some of you don't know, Wal-Mart generally commissions it "category leader" to produce the same products under a Wal-Mart name. I think some have mentioned that Special Kitty is made by 9 Lives. My husband works for the world's leading lawn and garden company (I'm not sure if I can use the name) in thier Wal-Mart business development team here in Bentonville, AR. They also make a Wal-mart brand of many of their products and they are virtually identical. When I asked him about this, he checked around and beleives that the category leader in premium pet food is Iam's. Therefore, it is highly likely that Maxx. Nutrition is actually produced by Iam's (using almost the same formula) and marketed by Wal-Mart.

I've never seen that stuff at any of our walmarts. They only carry Special Kitty, Friskies, Purina, 9 Lives, Iams, and Fancy Feast.

Do they carry it in smaller bags? 8 lbs. sounds like a lot - I don't have much room in my pantry to store stuff. I buy Iams in the small bags at Dollar General - I think it's like $2.50 a bag, but I don't remember since I haven't been to DG much since I moved. It's in a bad location and doesn't have as much as my hometown's DG. I think at Wal-mart, Iams is only available in the large bags. I found the small bags at Kroger, but it cost twice as much as DG. So, it's been tough getting a good food for Maisey. I can't picture the Max Nutrition, and since someone else said they don't have it at their's, we may not have it at our's. Wal-mart's vary quite a bit - our's is a SuperWal-mart, but it seems like it has less pet stuff than regular Walmarts.

I got the kitten formula in a 4 lb bag for about $4. The bags are balck with pastel-type writing on them, kitten formula is purple. I've seen it in every Supercenter around here, but they tend to try out the new things on the locals first.
If you ask nicely, though, they will generally put it in your store or carry a small amount just for you!

Thanks. Since my girl is a full-grown cat, I wonder if the kitten formula would work for her? Hmm, I'll go sometime this weekend and see what all they have.

talk to your vet ...

Maxxium is decent but many Walmarts carry Natural life and that is quite good

In them thar hills...
I have used maxximum before from Walmart and my cats loved it. The reason I don't use it now is because I have so many cats. I can't find it in large sizes like 20lb bags, but it is good food.

hmm, I might search on line for that.

Mine eat Purina complete right now.

Oh, they don't sell it in big bags? then its a no can do for me, i have 8 hungry mouths to feed and I'm ont going to the store every week for food, plus that would just tempt me to buy other stuff
I buy the big bags of Chicken Soup, I think its 20lbs, and that costs me 21.99 at Pets Supplies, good food good price, works for me!

That is true.

Grass is much better for hairballs than any diet. My cats eat grass regularly and they never have hairballs.

If only the Special Kitty is carried in your Wal-Mart, their kitten food is pretty good for adult cats. Anything else is junk.

If you have eight furbabies your best bet is actually a feed store, not Wal-Mart. Feed stores carry much bigger bags and they tend to be much cheaper.

My vet told me not to get the Special Kitty food anymore. She said that it has been known to cause UTI's, especially in male cats.

I was looking up the info on that other food that you all have been talking about, and I remember reading somewhere that it is actually Purina's food, but in Wal-mart brand bags. It wouldnt' really surprise me though cause a lot of vitamin companies do the same thing.

It is small. It has a shelf (more like a rack), but I can't fit a large bag on there because it's so close to the ceiling. I also don't have room under my sink or anywhere else - it can't be someplace Maisey can access.

Nerelda - I wonder about the regulation of cat food - if what is on the label is actually in the food. Purina has a different ingredients list than Maxx Nutrition. I wish I could pour out some Maxx at the store and compare it to Purina before I buy it! If it is much more expensive than Purina, though, I won't get it. It sounds like the kitten food is the same price, but I don't think I'll do that. Probably will get Iams if I can't find the Maxx in a small bag...

That is only true for the dry food. Their wet food is made by 9Lives.
