In everyone else's experience, has the mother remained fairly chubby in the belly area after pregnancy? I know they gain some weight before giving birth, but I'm not sure how overweight they tend to get.

Ruby was chubby for about 12-24 hours after giving birth, enough so to make me worry that all the kittens might now have come out. I suppose cats would be like humans in that a woman's uterus stays large for a few hours to a few days after birth and has to contract down to a normal size during that time. Ruby still is a bit "baggy" but I assume most of that is all the milk she is producing.

Maybe she has worms? I had a few fosters who looked pretty round after having their litters, and it was worms! Don't use over the counter wormers. Just check with your vet for what is safe to use when Mom cat is nursing the kittens.

I somehow doubt that it's worms because we had the cat checked out by the vet as soon as we got her, and she stayed in our bathroom the entire time we've had her (for the past few weeks). We wanted to make sure she wouldn't carry anything that could be harmful to our kitten or puppy.

I know worms can happen in pregnancy and after birth it is triggered, but it could also be just weight. Skittles looked big for 48 hr then she just had nothing but stretchy skin. Now she looks great.

I am zookeeper's girlfriend. I took the cat to the vet when we first found her and the vet did give her the deworming medicine, so I'm almost absolutely sure that doesn't have worms. She is pretty fat though, but it's more of a sagging fat belly than a round belly like before she had the kitten. I think she just gained a lot of weight. She is the least active cat I've ever seen and she's not even a year old!
