I will be getting a 16 week old kitten in a few weeks. Right now, the foster home is feeding Kitten Chow and 9 Lives canned.

I know there is a LOT of different ideas on what to feed kitties here. But... here are my main questions:

-- it seems that most dry food comes in a "kitten" version but many canned does not. Is it ok to use "kitten" dry food and regular canned food?

-- I was label reading the dry foods at the grocery store (most started with corn something) Purina Kitten Chow started with meat -- does this make it a good dry food?

-- what is wrong with 9 Lives or Fancy Feast canned food? The FF especially looked ok to me as far as the ingredients went.

PS: Our cat growing up lived to be 19 with no medical issues -- all he ate was 9 Lives canned and occasionally FF (mom thought it was too expensive). he also ate dry for snack.

meat, fish, no cows milk. m .e .a .t !!!! f .i .s .h !!!!! quality bottled water! believe me your paying for all the chemicals they put in all that maize, cornmeal, crap whatever cat buscuits are meant to be! or whatever catfood is meant to be made of! it costs more to feed your cat with chemical junk food than to make them some food yourself

Umm fish is not a naromal diet for any cat ... there are only two that make fish a regular meal plan.. chicken duck other fowl along with mice lizard and other small animals are a cats normal prey ...

The new Iams are pretty decent but not at the same price as lower grain and food s with what liver it is ( I licken the new ones to Petsmarts Authority only the latter is far cheaper)

My younger kittens ate mostly authority kitten and nutro max kitten the first few months with me. They would have eaten it longer if they didn't start sharing meal time with my picky adults. My two older cats didnt seem to like the iams canned kitten at all compared to other foods, and the younger two didn't seem that crazy for it. If I were you I wouldn't change the dry food right away, and offer the same brand of wet for at least a couple days. Then I would try something a little higher in quality for the wet.. iams wet despite what I just said.. or the authority wet or some other high quality brand, and see if they will take it. Then I would gradually (very slowly) switch the kitten food over to something better. Others have made suggestions which are pretty good, I like pro plan, authority, nutro, nutro max and also purina one, although it's not a "premium" brand per se. Any other premium brand would also be good, though I think these are the most affordable.
I wish mine would eat something better than friskies, 9 lives and whiskas for the wet. It seems the better the food, the more they don't eat! I prefer to give the four cats the equivalant of 2 cans a day so I know they are getting some wet in their diet, as I think it's good for them even if it's not a premium brand. They are not picky at all in the dry food so that's where I aim for quality.
