Hi all

Well last night after no signs at all Ebony gave birth to 6 gorgeous kittens 4 black and 2 grey.

Mum is very content and pleased with herself and kittens are all doing well.

One is a bit smaller than the others but still weighs in at over 3oz

Mum severed the cord and ate the afterbirth of the first kitten then promptly passed it to me. After I warmed it up and gave her a break she went to on to deliver the other 5whilst feeding those already born. She didn't cut the cord for the rest so I did it for her.

All afterbirths present and accounted for.

I'm very tired but overjoyed with the new arrivals.

Pics will follow later.

One question though, how can I tell them apart? I want to monitor their weight especially with a larger litter like this but with 4 all black and 2 all grey kittens it's going to be hard. Any ideas welcome

Also is it normal for the mum to purr while she was delivering?

It's good all went well. Now is the time to make sure that mom does not have any interaction with any intact males as she could become pregnant again.

As for how to tell her litter apart...I know some people will use a different nail polish on the nails of 1 paw.

Thats a great idea for being able to tell them appart.

Should the kittens be weighted daily?

Thanks for all your kind words.

The nail polish thing sounds like a good idea. I'll have to take some pictures of our fancy painted up kittens!

You don't have to weigh kittens everyday, but I like to do this to make sure they are gaining weight and spot any potential problems early on, especially as there are 6.

Ebony is an indoor cat and our male in neutered. This litter was planned, but yes we will be very careful she doesn't slip out the front door. There are always 2 doors between her and the outside for that reason

Here's our first pics. Some aren't very clear as it was the middle of the night and camera battery was getting low.[/IMG]

This is the whole bunch this morning when I took them out to weigh them and check them over. I think mum enjoyed the break to clean up etc too.

It's just one big mass of fur I'll take individuals later when I check on them and do some toe painting.[/IMG]

Nail polish would work or you could try clipping one nail (different on each) for a few weeks.

Personally, I never weighed my kittens - would go by feel of the body and general overall actions.

The two blues will probably be easier to tell as the shading should be a little different. Never had mostly the same color - always had different colors or markings.

Tho I did have a litter of Russian Blues and after a month old, could tell the difference in shading or facial features.
