Hi!

I've recently introduced my new cat, Pearl, to my other cat, Abby. Pearl used to stay in my room, so I used to feed her there. But now that she has free run of the house, I have moved her food from my room to the kitchen. My problem is that Abby wants to eat Pearl's food! Abby is raw fed and Pearl is being transfered from Purina Cat Chow to California Natural. Pearl will eventually be on raw, too, after a couple weeks on CN. I just don't want to shock her system.

Anyway, I can't put the food on the floor, because the dogs will get at it. I have it on a table right now, accessible for Pearl, but not the dogs. But Abby seems to think that Purina tastes better than her raw. So she's been eating Pearl's kibble. Everywhere I move it where Pearl can get at it, Abby gets at it too! What am I to do?
I do feed Pearl canned food meals, but she's used to have free run of her dry food. She likes to pick at it through out the day, which is fine, because she's not one of those cats who eats it all at once and gets fat. I also measure how much dry I gave her, anyway. Help! I really don't want Abby eating that stuff. I'm trying to wean Pearl off of it and I don't want to wean a second cat! So, what should I do? Thanks!

Well, some cats are just hoarders. If it looks tasty and smells tasty, they eat. Sort of like me and chocolate, if it's nearby it doesn't matter how big or great the meal I just was, I'll snarf it down.

Your best bet, while one you might not love is to stop free feeding and supervise several feedings throughout the day so Abby can't pig out. This might actually help in the process of acclimating Pearl to a raw diet as she'll be eagerly anticipating being fed several times a day.

Good luck!
Rachel

Yeah, I guess I'll have to feed her meals. Thing is, she likes to "pick" at her food. But if she doesn't her meal, then it gets taken away, correct?

yeah ... basically measure out what you want her to eat, put it out in front of her, she eats, a wee bit later pick it up whats left
