Hi all

Firstly congrats to all those whose kittens have arrived safely and to those mommys out there that are Pregnant.

Now that I know Mitsy is pregnant i want to make sure I am doing the right thing.

I have made up my last childs cot as only taken it down 3 weeks ago and Mitsy was always in it so it back up in spare room with her duvet that she likes cuddling into and have stopped her going out.Kids cant get to her which is so much better and means she in her own room(have child safety gate so she not locked in)

Thing is what Cat food should I be feeding her?? and is it ok for her to just use any cat litter(not shared I mean prouct?)? and lastly how soon after the birth can she be dressed just so I know or maybe just ask Vet lol.

Hope you can all healp me.

xx

She must be happy about her own room
Towards end you might want to lock her in cause a-you want to know where she is/havign them(won't have to do a house search if she goes into labor and is hiding) and b-she might not be able to jump to well depending on how many are comign and how she reacts to the pregnancy. I put my pregnant cat on kitten food(science diet and royal canin babycat) towards end of preg and shes still on that kittens are 9 weeks but still nursing some). You will want her on a non scoop litter-so she doesn't have kittens in box and end up all clumped up S) I use walmarts special kitty clay litter or tidy cats clay. Also kittens are going to eat anythign they see-food litter the rug(and food seems to be last thing thye eat anyway...lol I'm not sure what you mean by dressed? do you mean spayed so she doesn't have more kittens? If thats it it really depends on the vet-I know some do it days after and some want you to wait 6 weeks while others tell you to wait till kittens are fully weaned and milk is dried up. RJ

for what to feed her any type of kitten food is fine AS long as it has a protien as the first ingredient. something like chicken. And try to find one with NO by products listed in the ingredients. Think those were the main rules that I was told by others.

I use maximum natural kitten that I got at Walmart. But my cat doesn't really like it which is strange since she likes the adult so until the kitten food is gone I mix it with the adult food. I will try another brand of kitten food once that bag is gone and I can get to Petco or Petsmart........

Welcome to TCS...I read in another post that Mitsy is an outside cat....since you now know she is pregnant, she needs to be kept indoors only. If you find this to be a difficult task, you can always put her in a dog crate or put her in a room where there are at least 2 doors between herself and the outdoors. She will need to remain indoors only (and away from intact males...since I don't know the status of your male cat) until her kittens are weaned and she can be safely spayed. Cats are induced ovulators and can become pregnant again as early as a week after giving birth and we would really recommend that this be Mitsy's only pregnancy (as we recommend for all cats that are not part of a registered/pedigreed program).

As far as food goes....you want to look for a high quality kitten food (one that has meat as the first ingredient...chicken, lamb, beef..not a "by product" or "meal" or any grain). Some owners prefer to feed only dry and others prefer to give mom both dry and some wet. As far as the litterbox goes...you will probably want to switch her over from a clumping litter to either clay or a biodegradiable variety (like Feline Pine) until the kittens are at least 3 months of age. Also, not sure what you meant by dressing...perhaps you can clarify that.

If your indoor male is not neutered, I would certainly recommend you get him to the vet so that he can be neutered prior to her giving birth (he will need to remain away from your female until it has been a month after his neuter).

Neutering is called dressing in Scotland - no idea why though. Some of the brands mentioned aren't available over here - for foods, I would avoid things like Whiskas - although it is one of the few kitten foods available. If you can afford it, I would feed HiLife - I know a rescue who feeds all cats and kittens on that and they are all healthy (she has done a nutrition course), although you can get kitten HiLife.
