I called the rescue and they said it was probably nerves. Of course, I think of Reilly and how he was ill from the time I got him until we put him down and now I am nervous!!!!

Also, is it better to give him his space or to pick him up and love on him a lot??? Oliver was a kitten so he wasn't phased at all coming here and Reilly was deathly ill so he didn't really care too much. Any ideas??? Thanks!

Definitely don't push yourself on him. Don't pull him out from hiding or force him to stay in your arms. Give him time and space to come to you (and your children).

I wouldn't ever pull a cat out from hiding. Not only is it rather rude to the cat, but I would think a cat that doesn't know you very well could get frightened and lash out.

Anyway, I instructed the kids to let HIM come to THEM. So far, he has snuggled up with everyone at least once. He came and sat with my 5 yo all snugged up to my son's side. It was cute.

He really likes to play with string so my hubby was playing with him with some wide shoelaces. (don't worry, we put them up when we aren't playing with him)

He seems to like to lay next to you, rather than on your lap. I think it is because it is warm in here. He seems to like to sleep on the linoleum too and I figured that was because it was cool.

He may also have been a bit queasy from the car ride. Or if you fed him something he's not used to eating, it could've upset his tummy.

Make sure you provide him a safe spot to get away from the activity until he fully settles into your home. Sounds like he's warming up to everyone already, which is wonderful!

Sounds like he is getting more comfortable. We also had a cat one time that would sit beside us but would never sit on our lap.
