I'm not really rooting for anybody. The U.S. probably won't make it into the next round, and while it would be nice for the German team to win "at home", I can't see it happening. They've won a couple of times before, anyway. The fans I'm most impressed with are the South Koreans - they know how to party, but then pick up their trash afterward!

Actually, the fans from all over have been great so far. No major trouble, nothing really to complain about (except for the crowds and noise level, but they were expected). I'm just surprised at how "happy" everybody seems, even when they lose. There are flags, fans, parties, jokes, etc., everywhere. Even the Germans, who can be a bit dour, are being super-friendly to the guests, trying to help them whenever they can (the lingua franca is English).
Fran, I wish the clouds were nasty! The forecasts call for thunderstorms, but it's still hot and bone-dry here. It was so hot today that one class had their French lesson in the stairwell, where it was a bit cooler.

So anyone would think that Switzerland won the whole competition today!! People have been driving around in their cars, flying flags out the windows and tooting their horns.

Who knows what the normally-reserved Swiss will do if they actually get somewhere in this competition - we might have noise after 10pm or something WILD like that

We are going to the park tomorrow night with some Swedish friends to watch England beat Sweden on the big screen

Thanks, Rigel! Robert wants them to win, and I guess I should be cheering the team on, especially since the coach, Klinsmann, was one of my favorite players when he was still active.
It's now raining in Stuttgart (finally!), but not here - we're too far east of the city.

I hate to tell you this, but the loud Swiss fans are still in Stuttgart. I saw whole groups of them today, and took some photos for one group. A lot of them have decided to stay in Germany as long as possible and party. Tens of thousands arrived a week ago for the game against France, and about half of them seem to be sticking around.

You look a bit glum, Fran. Don't worry, Australia will probably make it into the next round.
Germany won its third game this afternoon, 3 :0 against Ecuador, and thus is "Best of Group A". Everybody seems to be partying. A lot of companies closed at 2 (the game was at 4), and we had to cancel the last of the afternoon classes, so that people could get to the public viewing areas or home in time for the match. I suppose I really do have to support the German team. One of my students has been living with one of the reserve members (Thomas Hitzlsperger) for a while now. She has moved with him from Munich to the UK (he played for Aston Villa) to Stuttgart. The poor girl never let on about him, though people were wondering about her Gucci and BMW. About two months ago she went to a charity event with him, and their photo was plastered all over the newspapers. So much for trying to keep a low profile.

It's hard not to take it seriously when you're right in the middle of it, like Fran and I. One of my colleagues was actually on TV last night. He's from Spain, and was in such a "get-up" (make-up, wig, weird costume) that he attracted the attention of the TV cameras. I saw him, but didn't recognize him - I'm surprised that others at school did!
This is bigger than the Super Bowl or Stanley Cup, because it's really international.
