I was reading someone's blog today when they said they hated Newfoundland and Saskatchewan accents.
I'm from Saskatchewan, and I know IloveSiamese is too, but I never really thought I had an accent, much less one compared to a Newfie one.

So, my question is: do you think Canadians have accents? (More specifically, Saskatchewan accents, but whatever.. anything will do!)

I know this is such a random thread, but I'm bored!

Canadians definitely have accents. Depending on the area, I've found many of them similar to what you find in the upper midwest of the US... northern Minnesota, North Dakota, Wisconsin. Certain vowels are distinctively more closed.

Haha, this is a good thread!

I think Newfies definately have an accent, like maybe it could be compared to a scottish or irish sounding accent.

Then Quebec has a french accent sound.

Saskatchewan...hmmm.... I know a lot of the native people have accents(especially older ones) because english isn't their first language (Cree, Dene, etc.) but I know I don't have one. I know a lot (not all) of small town people like to talk with what I call a "hick" accent lol but that's all I can think of.

IMO all parts of the world have an accent different that any other part. Not everyne that lives there has that accent though. Living in the south I get asked a lot where I am from because I have a mix of all the accents from all the places I have lived. My vowels are like you northerers and I say tote and yall and other words like a true southerner!!

I am pretty sure the people from Quebec have a french accent because they speak french though...They are not just english people with weird accents like the rest of the english folk

LOL I know that!
But a few Newfies I know speak Gaelic (or however you spell that) or sing in it and they have accents from that.

Well when I talk people ask if I'm from Minnesota rather than Wisconsin.
If you want accents talk to people from the upper peninsula of Michigan-most have a Finnish heritage.

I always think of Canadians saying "aboot the hoose"! Or that's how it sounds to me!

But I think everyone has an accent. I grew up in Arizona and moved to Georgia for college and I always have to be careful to not let that Southern twang creep in! And, oh my god, if I'm back home visiting I better not say y'all ever or I'll be in so much trouble!

I'm in the same boat. I was born in North Dakota, grew up in Germany and have been in Arkansas (of all places) for 12 years. When I meet Northerners, most say I have a flat accent, no twang... I am very proud of that!

Haha, that's funny. When I'm watching Dr.Phil and he says roof it sounds like he's saying ruff. totally hilarious.

It's possible to speak with little inflection and neutral vowels, which kinda obliterates any accent. It's hard, though.

When I was down in New Mexico, I never noticed and difference (unless they spoke another language) and the people I asked said I didn't have an accent.

What is the difference????

in a pile of open toed shoes!
I have the same problem being an army brat. I grew up all over NY, so I say alot of things with alot of awwww sounds like cawfee, dawg, and leave alot of r's off the ends of words and replace them happily with an A like in Lawn Mowa....see, it sounds perfectly right. But I have lost most of it since I have lived all over. I also pronounciate my words extra clear and my SIL always teases me. words like eeeenough, instead of "a" nough, and veeeehicle instead of vihicle. Owell... what can you do? Besides I think people with different accents are just lovely... it's a spark for conversation!

I used to tease my mom when I was little because she would say "warsh" instead of wash! She was born in Indiana, but neither of her parents say it that way so who knows where she picked it up from!

I really only notice a difference in accent between canadians and americans on certain words. Like abowt vs aboot
. But otherwise They sound the same to me!

i'm from the middle of Missouri so there are some hicks aaround here but i can count on my hands how many i've seen. so i notice southern, northern, and canadian accents. i watch Degrassi (canadian show) all the time and you can only tell they have an accent on words like "about" and "sorry" (IMO). Do you guys think Missourians and people from like Kansas and stuff have an accents?
