So far the stray I took in had 1 kitten. It looks just like it's mom, a tabby (looks a bit like a really tiny racoon)
.

Other than the fact that it doesn't seem to spend much time near any nipple, it seems okay. It seems like it's just sleeping. I was under the impression that it would need to be at it's mom's nipple a lot when first born, but it seems like it just wants to sleep (and mom just wants to rest before popping any more kittens out as well). Is this pretty normal for it to be sleeping and not drinking much milk yet? It was just born an hour ago.

I'm going to sleep, but I'll post an update when she's finished giving birth to the other kitten (or possibly other 2 kittens, we're not sure yet).

I'm pretty sure it's normal, even though I'm not completely sure. My cat had kittens about 9 days ago, and neither my cat or the kittens were interested in breast feeding until after all the kittens were born, and they were all situated.

So long as the kitten did nurse you should be okay, if it's not getting fed at all kitten will cry.

The vet said there were 2 kittens, possibly a third. It's been about 8 hrs since kitten #1 was born, and she is showing no signs of giving birth to any more kittens. Is it possible that the other kitten has not been making its way out to be born because it did not make it and is no longer alive? I'm confused as to why she still has a big belly but shows no signs of having any more kittens.

I've seen stories on here of cats having more up to 24 hours later. So long as momma isn't pushing, with no kittens coming out it's okay.
Always call your vet if you're not sure.

Zookeeper- I came home around 6 pm to find my cat had given birth to 1 kitten. I went to bed at midnight and she showed no signs of any more. When I woke up in the morning there was another kitten. There was a loooong time between kittens and the vet told me he had a cat that went 2 days between kittens

Thanks for the replies. I guess it is possible that each kitten is from a different male cat, but I guess I assumed that if she was expecting a small litter of only 2 (maybe 3) then they were all from the same male cat. But I guess it's possible that her other kitten(s) aren't quite fully developed yet.
I will keep everyone updated if anything changes, but right now, she's purring and looks perfectly comfortable with her kitten. She's been so happy, even when she was in labor, she purred the entire time. Every time I go in to see her she starts purring, so she's definitely not stressed out or in any pain at the moment.

Well she's way too chubby to not have more kittens. The only thing that worries me is how much movement I've seen in her belly the past week, and now there is very little movement. I'm worried there may be a kitten that didn't make it still in her belly, but my girlfriend swears she can feel some movement of another kitten in there. I do know that one side is bigger than the other.
My girlfriend took some pictures, but I'm too busy studying to post them up now. After my exam tonight I'll post a few up. The kitten is just a tiny replica of her mother.
They look EXACTLY the same. It will be interesting to see if the other kitten (or kittens) look the same, I suspect they will. I'm guessing that the tabby coloring gene is pretty dominant? It does seem that tabbys and orange tabbys and spotted tabbys are the most common cats around here other than the 4-5 black cats I see wandering around our building all the time.

Has anyone had experience with a cat having a litter of one kitten from one cat, and another kitten days later from another male cat? I never thought that a cat would have a litter of only 2, and each kitten could be from a different male. Is it pretty uncommon for a female to mate with multiple males and only have 1 kitten of each male?

I am positive that Layla, the runt of Ruby's litter is from a different male. Although she was born at the same time, she just basically slipped out last dragging her placenta with her. She was NOT ready to come out. He level of development is so different from that of her sibs. I can't beleive she is still alive, to be honest. She has significantly less fur, you could feel all of her bones at birth (she's filling out a bit now) and her belly skin was transparent. If this is the case with your cat and she is giving the other baby(s) time to develop, be thankful!

Sometimes a mother will have one kitten and then the next day or two have the rest of the litter. I am not sure why that happens sometimes. But if you notice she does not go in labor again in the next couple of days, I will have her be checked out by the vet
