The bathroom that Ruby and the babies are in is getting somewhat stinky! I policed the litter box and it was pretty full from yesterday evening to this morning, but that does not seem to have gotten rid of the stinky-ness. I am going to change out the bedding in thier box today and maybe that will make a difference. Is is safe to use bleach in the same room as the babies. I'd like to bleach the floors (they got pretty messy during her labor and I only sponged them down with water.) Also, can I use spray air freshener around them? Just wondering what the babies can tolerate!

I would not use spray air freshners (maybe the stick on kind up high). You can change the bedding to fresh as long as mom and babies are placed right back there.

As far as bleach, I wouldn't use it as it may be too strong. A good soap (dishsoap) and water should be fine to use on the floor.

In my opinion, I would not use bleach or any chemical cleaners around very young kittens. Just wash with mild liquid soap and put up with a bit of a smell for a week or two. Try some herbs in the room to disguise it meanwhile!

So it is ok to change the bedding? It won't make her not know her bed or anything? What about some of those natural cleaners, rosemary and such...

I successfully changed the bedding and ended up mopping the floors with Johnson's Baby Wash Lavender. Now the room smells like my girls just took a bath! The smell is gone. Yay!

Actually I had 2 sets of bedding ready. First one (pillowcase with newspaper) was for delivery. I took that one out after all kittens were born and put a 2nd pillowcase with towel inside for their bedding for a week or so. In the meantime #1 pillowcase was cleaned and stuffed with a new towel to use later. Mom and babies were 100% ok with this arrangement.

Of course, they also were caged for several weeks which helped in mom not moving the kittens.
