Ruby had her babies yesterday. One of the babies is extremely small and actually lookds underdeveloped compared to the rest of the litter. On the Ruby had babies thread, I mentioned that she had to be resucitated...so she had a bumpy ride into this world.

Last night she was nursing fine, but everytime I checked, she would be off the nipple and I would get her back on one.

This morning, I have managed to get her on a nipple twice, but now she is not taking it.

Here the question: Do you think she is just full and trying to rest or is she slipping away? I know that my human daughter was very small (5lb. 11oz.) and I nursed her more frequently but for shorter periods of time than a bigger baby would. I'm hoping that's the case here. Any advice is appreciated!

Hi, I was wondering if you are able to know how many hours has it been since the baby has nursed? How many other kittens, does the baby have to fight off alot of other kittens or is there "Easy access?" Is she moving alot and making noises or still and quite? I had one that faded the day after being born but it was obvious that he was fading because there wasnt much movement or little peeps...... I hope he's doing ok.

My gray kitten was born the same size as her sister and brother, but as this recent week went by, her siblings got bigger and bigger and she got smaller and smaller. Like your kitten, she would search for a nipple, find one and then she would be off of it. I had to guide her to a nipple a few times but she would only take it for a couple of mins before she wiggled and fell asleep. If I would you, I would take her to the vet. But the sad thing is, my vet was not able to check her insides and I lost my baby this morning.

But I do hope your baby makes it! I am not sure how much it will cost the vet to look at her insides, but you can try and find out. Good luck with her, I hope things get better for your baby!

She last nursed about 1.5 hours ago and she will nurse 30-40 minutes at a time. She is active and gets really gets going when I pick her up. Her sibs are doing a great job of leaving her "her nipple." Here is a picture of her with her brother (one of the biggest of the litter). You can see just how tiny she really is.

Oh wow that is tiny! Well if she is nursing that often, that means she is fighting and thriving! Just continue to watch to make sure she gets fed, because as those other kittens grow she might get pushed out a lot. Also you might want to giver her some KMR, put some on her lips and let the milk trickle down her throat. That will help boast her system a bit.

They are beautiful babies. Watch carefully, I also fostered a litter and the runt was way smaller, he still is small. He did fine, he is just smaller
Here is a picture to show how much smaller he was.

OMG! That makes me feel so much better. Seriously, a weight just lifted off my shoulders. With such a huge size difference between her and her sibs, I almost figured that losing her was inevitable. I got her back on a nipple and she is sucking away right now!

Just keep a closer eye on the little runt. Make sure she nurses often, and stays with the others. Pick up some KMR for just in case. I would also get a scale so you can weigh them all daily. Then you will know if she is gaining regularly.

She is so cute, as is the other kitten!

I agree, weighing them is important. As long as the runt is gaining weight, you should be safe. Keep us posted and good luck.
