The kitten I recently picked out will be about 12 weeks when I get him. Is it safe at this age to use clumping litter? I keep reading "never change litters" since it could cause avoidence so I'd rather start with clumping litter since I may get a LitterMaid someday.

My kittens are 8 weeks old and I've been using a clumping litter with them and they have been doing fine. I don't see any reason not to use it at 12 weeks.

With my last litter of kittens I switched litters at about 12 weeks old. My personal experiences with LitterMaid were horrible. The kitten's wastes would stick to the rake, and it would be so hard to clean off. But that was just my experience. (Just wanted to let you know...)

meow meow...there is a lot of controversy surrounding the use of clumping litter for young kittens. Some people don't recommend it for the first 6 months...because kittens can ingest it which "could" cause issues. Best thing is to ask the person who has been raising the kitten what they are using and continue to use that litter in the short term.
