I don't use litter liners either. My cat will tear them to shreds. Unlike many who have already posted, I also cannot just toss the litter or anything to do with his litterpan into the trash can. I did that one night and woke up to a litter mess, with a pitty piss pile in the middle (oh, and it was right on the carpet too...). It was funny, but ticked me off a the same time.

So far the litterboxes I have liked the most (and believe me I've tried many) have been.

A large high sided rubbermaid bin ($5 at walmart). It's a 23 gallon bin, well over a foot high and can hold 25lbs+ of litter. My cats can scoop till their hearts content and it won't spill out of the box!

We recently got a LitterMaid Mega Elite (I had their first edition Littermaid and didn't like it, motor wasn't very powerful after a year of intermediate use.)
I like it so far, we've had it for about a month. It's more powerful then the old edition, high enough sides so the cats don't fling piles of litter out, just a little. And it has an ionic air cleaner that runs when it scoops the box.

I can't use the plastic liners my cats just shred them, or they come off the box/don't fit, etc. Plus my cats chew/eat plastic =p

Under a stack of blueberry waffles.
I've never used liners. They seem like too much of a hassle. Instead, I just bought very deep litterboxes and keep them full ofat least 6 inches of litter. It's extremely rare that anything reaches the actual pan through that.

I've got a wide variety of litter boxes & not one has liners it in. I discovered that I have a litter box liner eating cat. I don't want Lily to die because of those silly things.

I have two 18 gal. rubbermaid tubs upstairs that get emptied every week. I have on rubbermaid tub & one "normal" hooded litterbox downstairs that get emptied once a week. Then, I have two litterboxes in the bathroom for the foster cats. One is extra deep & one had a hood. If there isn't one, then Damita(the blind one) kicks litter everywhere. She can kick that litter 5'!!! I clean the bathroom boxes as often as needed because it is such a small space.

When they get cleaned, they get washed with hot soapy water. Once a month, they get washed with bleach water.

Uh ohhh! You just gave me a wonderful idea!!!!!! I am going to get a rubbermaid and make it into a hooded litterbox by cutting a square up near the top of one of the sides, big enough for a cat!!!!

I have a litterbox with the extended sides, and love it, but Cody & Dolly still manage to get litter everywhere.
My momma cat has a small litterbox withour tall sides, due to lack of room in the kennel she is nursing her kittens in. Our outside kennel cats use rubbermaid containers.

Now I am going to have to see if we have an extra rubbermaid!!!!

2 cats, 3 litter boxes with high sides and dome tops. I don't use liners anymore because the kitten thinks liners are fun to dig up and play with. I scoop twice a day. I empty, clean and scrub with dish soap and hot water then dry with paper towels every other week.
I'm thinking about getting 3 of those littermaid boxes. I'm getting tired of scooping 3 boxes. LOL

What kind of tool would you need to cut an opening - wouldn't the material crack?

Depending on the size of the storage box you can use a dremel, a hacksaw, or even heavy scissors. The plastic isn't usually so brittle that it cracks.

I would use a liner if I found a type that fit the box like a glove. I use corner-shaped boxes, so that'd be hard (not that it'd be easy for any shape). I think they're more trouble than they're worth, but I like the idea.

I don't use covered boxes because I don't think my cats would want to have to potty in there where the smell is concentrated, even for a short amount of time. They're not shy, so they don't mind.

My girl has always used a covered box. That is what she is used to using. I tried the liners at one time. She swallowed part of tit. No more liners for us!

I tried a liner once when I first set up the box. It didnâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]t fit very well in the corners and it got shredded. For some reason Chester likes to dig in the corners. He will make his deposit in the center of the box but will take the litter from the corners to cover it up with.

Some times I find a mountain in the middle and a spot in the corner where you can see the bottom of the box.

I donâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]t use a covered box. The way he throws the litter around I can imagine it would end up all over him and more than likely he would shake it off all over the house.
