Hello, great site.

I have a maine coon cat about 8 years old that keeps getting reoccuring puffy lips in the front and in the back right of his mouth. I've tried the following with no luck:

1. Changed bowls, plastic, glass and now stainless steel.
2. Had depo shots from vet, seemed to have worked for a while however since I moved into newer townhome it keeps occurring more frequently.
3. prednisone about 10 mg each day and gave him this daily for a couple weeks, took care of the problem so I quit giving it to him. Again the problem reoccurs so I start to give it to him again and recently does seem like the front part of the lip has gone down however the back part which is pink and puffy and hard has not goe down. I took him to a dermatoligist this morning and spent 120.00 just for the consultation, they gave him a prescription of Dexamethsome 1.5 mg which seems to be a prescription that I get at a regular drug store, can't wait to see the cost of this!
4. I've also wanted to note that I've tried different cat foods over the years and seems like this didnt matter but then again he seems to be more content with his current Iams adult regular chicken flavored. I've read that cats can be allergic to corn, I'll have to check to see if corn exists. The vet also had him on some expensive hydro allergic cat food that I got at the vet but he didnt seem to like that.

Anyway, not sure if anyone can give me any advice but I sure would like to hear if anyone else has experienced these symptoms with their cat?

i don't know if this is the same thing, but my cat has something that sounds similar. he's had it for years, i think its Eosinophilic granuloma. he was on prednisone for a looonnggg time, it didn't help. he's had surgery, it's come back. it's non-cancerous. there's chemo for it, but i can't afford that. he was recently doing okay, but he's had another flare up. he's on really strong antibiotics now because yesterday he went to the vet because his anal sacs were infected. he's on 22.7mg of baytril, it's for bacterial infections. my mother seems to think that it was originally triggered by a bacteria, because we went away about 10 years ago on vacation and the person who fed him never changed his bowl or dumped out his old food for weeks(we were using plastic, because 10 years ago we werent informed that it was bad), and when we came back he was like that. do you have a picture or something so i can tell if its the same?

http://www.marvistavet.com/html/eosi...granuloma.html It sounds like granuloma. Our cat had a problem with it, which was treated with cortisone shots. Jamie is allergic to a few grains, so he gets foods that contain as little as possible. Have you tried him on a canned food only diet? Preferably just meat, or meat with a little bit of rice. One tip I got from an EGC forum (German, but if you Google eosinophilic granuloma you should find an English-language one) was to give him 500 mg. of fish oil, with Omega fatty acids, daily for up to 6 weeks during an acute attack, and then once a week for maintenance. That's in addition to any vet-prescribed medication. It seems to be working.

My vet does now, as do many others. In fact, a lot of vets' offices sell the capsules as a supplement, as they also help against dandruff. It's very easy to administer: just pierce the capsule with a knife and squeeze the oil over the cat food.
