Yeah!!! Finally some good news for a change!

They work, provided the owner or vet actually registers the pet, the information is updated when the guardian moves, shelters scan for transponders, and the pet has a "readable" transponder. I'm very much in favor of universal norms for the chips; the current hodge-podge in the U.S. isn't the least bit helpful.

Oh I can only wish I'll ever find Chester .

When he was taken, all of his pics were also taken. Every single day I forget something about him..............

They save lives... but only if the animal is scanned. That is the downside, if someone finds your cat and never takes it to the vet... nothing happens. If someone keeps your cat for a year or two, and takes it to the vet and never mentions it being found, odds are it won't be scanned.

Anywho a cat in california got lost, the humane society didn't scan it, it got adopted out. The owners moved to Oregon, and now a year later they gave the cat to Oregon Humane Society, they scanned the cat and it was reunited with its real owner. So... it's good and bad. My kitty has a chip, even though I decided not to let him be indoor outdoor lol. He has it either way.

I was wondering yesterday randomly if the people who pick up bodies on the road, like dogs and cats if they scan them before sending them to county... to let owners know what happened?

They don't in my county. They're only required to notify the owner if the animal was wearing an ID tag.

That's really sad... I mean I know the odds of a dead cat on some old country road is slim that they are microchipped, but stranger things have happened.

After working as a tech at an emergency clinic, I believe microchips really can save lives. So many animals would get picked up by passer-by's on the road after getting hit by a car. Many of these animals were wearing collars, but no tags or microchips. Without this info. there wasn't much we could do. If their injuries weren't too severe, they'd get treated to a certain extent and then sent to the shelter. So sad. We scanned every unowned animal that came through the door. A couple times we got a hit-by-car animal that had a microchip and we were able to save it because we found the owners!
Our city keeps a public log of descriptions/locations of all the dead animals they pick up off the road.
