I'm afraid this should be in the Rainbow Bridge forum..I do know that sometimes what we do as caregivers only can go so far but still I have this guilt cloud over me and I guess that I've lots to learn yet.
A couple of days ago I got a feral Mom to the vet for spaying because I and others have seen her mating and I though she was in heat again.
Her litter should be abt 8 weeks later this month. Last time I saw her 3 survivors of a litter of 5 kittens they were abt 1 month old but she hid them good and never saw them again. I looked and looked, asked around but nobody heard them so I thought maybe they died. She's pretty wild and only ate when I left, then she dissapeared. So when she was trapped (it was intended for another that needs boosters) I didn't think twice and got her to the clinic, she was spayed today. The vet thought she wasn't in heat, she'd be staying longer b/c of checkups and recup.
My guilt is that I've no way to know if her kittens were alive and if so I'm or was killing them

It has happened that I postponed spaying the Mom until I made sure her kittens were OK, etc but by then Mom was pregnant again..
I really feel bad but with no foster homes available I didn't try to get her kittens when they were around. And when I saw her frolicking and being mounted..
I got another feral that was so reluctant to get in the trap, he was neutered today also (after 2 yrs of trying!) but I sent 3 innocents to the Bridge, real sad, don't you think

Zinc...let's not focus on the possibility of these kittens being dead (since you don't know that that is the case)...let's instead celebrate the success of a cat who can no longer add to the overpopulation.

Good for you!!

I agree, having her spayed (and the male neutered) is a wonderful thing. You should be very pleased. It sounds to me as if the kittens did not make it, so having her spayed was the correct thing to do.

Thank-you Katie and lotsofcats..your words (and cyberhugs) make me feel better. There're coyotes and (ack) loose dogs around, besides of roaming toms, and Insua (the feral) is a petite cat that I don't know how managed to move her kittens. I've seen her chasing others from her nest (if you remember I posted when they were born, they were the ones I opened a shelter and they there were) when she had them first so I imagine eventually some critter got them.. and yes, it's very good she won't have more litters.
If she was mating again abt 1 month afer giving birth, would it mean her litter died?
Years ago there was a totally freaked feral Mom that abandoned her llitter and dissapeared to reappear very pregnant, had a sick litter, but one survived, then the poor thing got pregnant again and dissapeared forever..I was afraid Insua was going the same way but fortunatly she is spayed now.
The male that I call Alvar is_coincidentally_one of the abandoned kittens. One of the cats we have, Clovis, is Alvar's brother and Margaret is also a former feral but from another litter. And way in my siggy's bottom below Clovis is a black cat walking away, that's Blacky, the colony's patriarch.
Thank-you again
