It's quite possible, but my brother made a conscious decision that, for him, a life without pets was unquestionable. His death was "accidental", in that a new tenant with three Persians had moved into the apartment next door just the week before he died, and the central heating system (forced hot air, which carried the allergans) delivered his "death sentence". My mom also has severe asthma attacks, but there's no way she'll give up pets (currently 3 dogs [two huge Labs and a Benji-type terrier mutt] and a cat). I'm allergic to cats, and have trouble with multiple dogs, but it's a good trade-off for me: I might suffer a fatal asthma attack, but a life without pets would be far, far, far worse.

That certainly does put a new perspective on this for me. I found this frustating because of all the unwanted cats that so desperately need a home; however when faced with a life without pets, I'd certainly be glad of an alternative. I would think the price tag would surely keep the market pretty low though?

Thank God for animal lovers like you! I missed having a cat terribly the few years that I wasn't allowed to. One of my worst nightmares is growing old and ending up in a nursing home where I wouldn't be able to have a cat.

Yup - just substitute `puppy' for `kitty' and there you have it.

It makes me sick - you do not mass produce animals to make money. The whole thing is disgusting. 10,000 cats by 2009? That's 3,330 cats per year, or nine kittens per day. I cannot believe these people can get away with even proclaiming that, let alone trying it!

And besides, whatever happened to accepting nature for what it is? Why is it that humans so desperately feel the need to shape everything in the world to suit us, instead of suiting ourselves to our world? To me, this is a symptom of a much deeper and larger issue with humanity itself.

I've already had my rant in the Cat Lounge, but just wanted to add here that the while thing is disgusting. My main gripe is that they don't mention anything about breed traits, colours or personalities. Is it a "breed" or are they various breeds that are bred to be hypo-allergenic.

The fact that they don't talk about the cats themselves screams KITTEN MILL to me.

Yeah, I am seriously appalled at the volume they plan on pumping out. It makes me ill to think about. But like I said earlier, I just don't think there would be the demand for so many kittens. Hope they at least only breed to order then.

From what I've read, there's no "breed" involved, so the cats are just moggies of varying shapes, sizes, and colors. The breeding stock was hypoallergenic, but basically your "run of the mill alley cat".
